Feb. 19-23 is School Board Recognition Week. This time is meant to recognize the contributions made by our school board members to our school districts. They spend countless hours attending monthly meetings; listening to ideas from parents, staff, students and community members; learning about educational issues; and participating in training opportunities.

February SMILE DRIVES are being hosted as a countywide project in conjunction with the Martin County Early Childhood Dental Network. Students are collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, etc.
Each school will decide where to donate the items collected after their Smile Drive. Consider having your child or any person wishing to donate items to bring them to the school. Thanks and keep brushing.

The Lady Jags certainly proved their team spirit when they gave Nicollet/Loyola senior Brooke Skrien a care package. Her family recently lost its home in a fire. They realized what a girl would need after such a loss, so the C, B and varsity players collected items for her. I personally want to thank each of you for your kindness shown to Brooke. When a personal tragedy happens, it's people like you that make a difference.

"1-2-3-Magic: Effective Discipline" for ages 2 to 12 is a class for adults, early childhood educators, teachers and family child care providers that will be held 6-8 p.m. Feb. 28 at Truman Public School. The instructor is Lori Ann Hameister.
Kids are just kids. In addition to being delightful, charming and affectionate, children also can present the adults in their lives with a steady diet of difficult behavior, whining, arguing, teasing, fighting, yelling, tantrums and pouting.
The 1-2-3-Magic program has practical and easy to use discipline techniques that are down-to-earth, kid-friendly and make a dramatic impact in a short time.
This training meets the Child Growth and Development/Behavior Guidance annual licensing training requirement for family child care providers. Content area 2c: Promoting Social and Emotional Development. Teachers and childcare providers can get credit for this through DEVELOP. Please bring your number along that night. Certificates of completion will also be available.
There is no cost for the class. A light lunch will be offered. Child care will be available. Please register by Feb. 21. Register through Truman Community Education at (507) 327-6917 or studerc@truman.k12.mn.us for the class and to reserve a spot for your child in childcare.

Home alone … Just mention the words "Home Alone" and children think of the excitement depicted in the movies of the same name. The reality of being home alone can evoke fear and anxiety in many children. Whether left alone for an hour after school or several hours a day during the summer, children should feel comfortable being alone.
An upcoming workshop for children will address several topics relating to being "Home Alone," including personal safety tips, tricky people, basic first aid, fire safety, handling the unexpected, internet safety, gun safety, dealing with loneliness and boredom, storm safety, dealing with siblings, and trust and honesty.
Students attend this class independently. Parents are encouraged to review the take-home information and discuss it with their child.
The class is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Feb. 28. The instructor is Lori Ann Hameister. Snacks will be provided. The class is designed for students in grades 2-6. The cost is $5 per student.
