Big Ten: No league championship game if college football moves to a 24-team playoff
CHICAGO (AP) — The Big Ten Conference would do away with its championship game if college football adopts a 24-team playoff. Commissioner Tony Petitti says that's a worthwhile sacrifice to get his preferred postseason format. "When we make this decision as a league – are we going to support 24 – that's where you start the conversation," Petitti said Tuesday as the Big Ten opened its football media days. "Are you willing to give up your championship game to have the expanded playoff?" Pettiti mentioned this possibility back in May as he stepped up his push to double the ...
Draymond Green agrees to a 1-year, $27.7M contract to remain with the Warriors, AP source says
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Draymond Green has agreed to a one-year, $27.7 million deal to return to the Golden State Warriors, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Green will sign the contract that essentially matches the deal he opted out of last month before the Warriors made an unsuccessful bid to sign LeBron James, the person said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been announced. ESPN first reported the deal. Green is now set to play his 15th season with the Warriors and if he plays in 51 games he will join ...
Royce Lewis hits walk-off triple as Twins rally past Royals 3-2 after Buxton exits with sore hip
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Royce Lewis hit a two-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Taj Bradley threw six strong innings for the Twins (54-54), who have won three in a row and five of six. They are third in the AL Cental, just two games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox. Kody Clemens doubled for Minnesota in the fourth and scored on Josh Bell's single. But center fielder Byron Buxton left in the fifth with right hip soreness after running to first base. It's the same joint ...
North Carolina places football GM Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave
North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid administrative leave. The school didn't provide details as to the reason, noting that employees and athletes aren't permitted to address the topic "as is standard procedure with personnel matters." Lombardi joined Bill Belichick in making the NFL-to-college move when the school hired the former New England Patriots coach in December 2024. Lombardi's career as an NFL executive had included ...
103-year-old Omaha man discovers passion for golf late in life, still chases birdies and beats pals
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Bob Walls was getting set to tee off on the first hole at his home course last week when his partners interrupted his pre-shot routine. "Get back here, man," James King said. "We're playing blues today," Dawn Dozier added. Walls wasn't having it. "When you're over 100, you can hit from anywhere you want," he told them. Then, with a silky smooth swing from the forward white tees, he thwacked the ball down the right side of the fairway just short of the green on the 180-yard hole. Not bad for a 103-year-old. Actually, pretty incredible. A record 6.3 ...
