Fairmont football history
With the Fairmont High School homecoming week coming to a close, here are some fast facts about the history and origins of this Cardinals football program. The first football game was played here in December of 1876, roughly two years before Fairmont was incorporated as a city. The Fairmont Football Club was later established in 1880, traditionally scheduling one game a year at the Fairgrounds. The first official high school season took place in 1901, with five scheduled games. That makes 2026 the 125th year of Fairmont High School football.
