Fairmont Speech runner-up at Big South tourney

FAIRMONT — On Thursday evening, March 17, the Fairmont Speech Team competed at The Big South Conference Speech Tournament hosted by Marshall. Fairmont took 35 speakers to the tournament. The Big South Conference schools in attendance for this evening of speech competition were Fairmont, Jackson County Central, Luverne, Marshall, Pipestone, Redwood Valley, Windom and Worthington.

All-Conference results were: Lauren Wheeler, 1st place in creative; Solveig Senf, 1st place in discussion; Sydney Blomster, 1st place in informative; Kaycie Brookens, 1st place in prose; Kara Fischer, 2nd place in duo; Selvin Forsythe, 2nd place in duo; Vanessa Schultze, 2nd place in prose; Grace Simpson, 2nd place in storytelling.

All-Conference Honorable Mention were: Eleanor Hamlet, 3rd place in great speeches; and Bel Lutterman, 3rd place in extemporaneous reading.

In team sweepstakes, Marshall was the All-Conference Champion with 190 points and Fairmont was the All-Conference Runner-up with 178 points.

The Fairmont Speech Team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker, and Miles Duffey.
