LAMBERTON — 2021 was a year of limited precipitation during the growing season at the University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center near Lamberton. Total annual precipitation for 2021 was 23.66.” This was a departure of -3.70″ from the historic average. The year’s largest rain event was on August 29 with 2.17″ recorded. There was only 2.33″ of precipitation recorded for the period of June 1 to August 22. The normal precipitation for this same period is 10.01″ resulting in a severe shortage of soil moisture available for crop growth. Above normal precipitation from the middle of August to the end of September allowed for a recharge in soil moisture.
December 2021 was the snowiest month of the year with 13.3.” The 10″ snow event on December 10 was the largest one day snow event during the year. The SWROC has recorded 14″ of snow so far in the winter of 2021-2022. As of January 2, 2022, there is 21″ of frost under bare ground.
