FAIRMONT - After two losses to start the year, Fairmont Boys Soccer got their first win Thursday against Waseca 2-0.
The action was fervent back and forth to start, with each team getting multiple chances to score. With multiple defenders on his case, Fernando Pablo Gomez broke through and slammed the ball past the goalkeeper to take the lead in the fifteenth minute.
While Waseca would press the issue numerous times, ultimately it would be 1-0 going into halftime.
The second half would see Fairmont take charge and have the ball on their side of the field more often. After 16 minutes in the second half, 56 minutes total, Nathan Paris made his own daring play and kicked the ball past the goalie for a score of his own, making it 2-0.
Defensive play continued to smother both sides, with a few chances apiece for each side to score, but nothing materializing. As the game wound down, Fairmont secured their victory over Waseca by stifling any momentum they sought to build.
On their first win of the season, Head Coach Brady Meyer said he was impressed with how they continuously played together as a team.
"I think we came together more tonight, and we saw some good passing, some good teamwork today," he said.
Early on, Fairmont did struggle with some looser play and a couple of yellow cards. Speaking to the tightening up of team play in the second half, Meyer said for the most part, they are a pretty disciplined team.
"It’s pretty easy to say, 'Hey guys, we gotta we gotta pull back a little bit, and this is how this ref is gonna start calling things, so we just need to adjust accordingly,'" he said. "We just gotta go out, play our game."
With this foundational win placed, Meyer said it feels great, but they need to build off of it.
"We have another tough week next week," he said. "Still continuing to work on our teamwork, team chemistry, and passing."
The Cardinals (1-2) have their next game against conference foes Wings United Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. on the Jeffrey Kot Fields.
