Area roundup: Kester, Berhow place first in conference tournament

PREP GOLF

Both Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West boys and girls golf teams competed in the first leg of the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Golf Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The boys’ event took place at Mayflower Golf Club, while the girls’ event was held at Winthrop Golf Club.

Starting with the boys, Sleepy Eye United finished first in the opening leg as a team with a 345, followed by Alden-Conger, which shot a 375 for second. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop turned in a 383 for third, followed by Springfield (386), Cedar Mountain (389), GHEC/T/ML (407), New Ulm Cathedral (415), St. James/Madelia (424), Martin County West (427), Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (451) and Wabasso (477). GHEC/T/ML’s Gavin Kester tied for first place with his impressive score of 84. SEU’s Anders Coulson and Nolan Kucera tied Kester. Knox Larson led the Mavericks with the lowest score of 93, good for 11th overall. Jevin Garry had a great day on the links for the Jaguars with his 102. Carson Scheff had the second-lowest score for MCW with his 105. Logan Zimmer cracked the top 35 for GHEC/T/ML after shooting 106.

Springfield won the team event for the girls after notching a 408, with SEU right behind with a 413. Alden Conger placed third after shooting a 424, and was followed by St. James/Madelia (457), GHEC/T/ML (459), New Ulm Cathedral (472), G-F-W (476), Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (480), Cedar Mountain (482), Martin County West (501) and Wabasso (539). Charlotte Berhow had another strong meet after shooting a 94 that took sole possession of first place. Morgan McCorkell was the highest finisher for the Mavericks after shooting a 115 and placing 24th. Teammate Clare Paulson was right behind her with a 120, and GHEC/T/ML’s Meredith Miller got a 122.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

ST. JAMES – The Fairmont track and field team swept the SJM Invitational #3 on Tuesday afternoon, with the boys and girls taking home first-place team finishes with 175 and 187 points, respectively. Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin placed fifth for the boys and fourth for the girls.

Tavian Harvey took home first-place finishes in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Kaden Bell and Cole Brockman got third and fifth in the 100, while Dakota Wiley, Cooper Kolander and Brockman finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200. Mollie Leiding and Emelia Klanderud got first and second in the 200 while getting second and third in the 100. Wiley got second in the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 52.36. Addison Toothaker and Madi Thompson got second and third in the same event. Brier Lenort and Carter Hanson placed first and second in the 800-meter dash. Cole Hanson and Abbie Simpson won the 1600-meter runs for the boys and girls, respectively. Michael Hamlet won the 3200-meter run for the boys, while Delaney Klug and Avery Steuber took home first and second for the girls. Adylen Laven won the 100 and 300-meter hurdles events. The boys’ and girls’ 4 by 100, 4 by 200, and 4 by 400 relay teams finished in first place. The boys’ 4 by 800 team continued its strong season with another first-place mark. Tyler Bicknase won the shot put, with Reed Johnson coming in fourth for the boys. Kaylee Kloeckner took home another first-place finish in her shot put toss. Addison Folkerts placed second and first in the discus. The Cardinal boys had a complete sweep of the discus from Caine Gronewold, Sean Cihoski, Johnson and Keyon Schutz, who got first, second, third and fourth. Bicknase got seventh. Tytan Tumbleson finished second in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Jase Meade and Landon Traetow got first and second in the pole vault for boys, while Ellie Perkins and Jadyn Montgomery did the same for the girls. Meade’s mark of 13′ 1″ is good for fourth all-time in program history. Simpson finished first in the long jump for girls. Emerson Jackson, Montgomery, Simpson and Harlee Fastnacht took home the top four spots in triple jump.

Evelynn Christenson had a great day for the Mavericks after winning the 800 and placing second in the 1600. Kate Swanson got fifth in the 1600 as well. Brody Cook and Conrad Gwin had personal best times of 12:00.10 and 13:13.86 in the 1600 for the boys. Mylee Larson got fourth in the girls’ shot put and discus. Sophia Peterson got sixth in the ladder. Lixon Forsberg took first place in the long jump with his personal best mark of 18′ 7″.

PREP BASEBALL

USC 13, MCW 3

WELLS – United South Central used seven hits to propel a 13-3 victory over Martin County West on Tuesday afternoon. Mason Atchley tossed four innings of one-run baseball, striking out five Maverick batters. All three MCW runs came in the fourth and fifth innings, with Liam Pytletski using a line drive single to bring in Caiden Loken and Brock Jagodzinske. Pytletski pitched one and one-third innings to start the game, allowing three earned runs and walking six.

MCW will play this Thursday against Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther.
