Area roundup: Fairmont golf sweeps home triangular

PREP GOLF
FAIRMONT – In an event that saw the likes of Fairmont, Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West compete together at Rose Lake Golf Course, it was the Cardinals who came out on top in both boys and girls matches. Fairmont boys scored a 171, and the girls scored a 182 to win first place in the triangular on Tuesday afternoon.
On the boys’ side of things, MCW’s Knox Larson and GHEC/T/ML’s Gavin Kester placed first and second individually with scores of 36 and 38, respectively. Fairmont’s Klay Beemer got third with his 41, while Macklain Anderson, Aaron Becker, and Carson Scheff tied for fourth with a 43. Jalin Jackson got seventh with his score of 44. Jaguar golfers Logan Zimmer and Elijah Jensen tied with Fairmont’s Chase Haugen for ninth place, securing a score of 45.
Fairmont’s Leslie Zarling finished first for the girls with her 41. GHEC/T/ML’s Charlotte Berhow notched a 43 that was good for second place. Fairmont’s Katherine Zelaya, Carly Gustafson and Ingrid Edman followed this with third, fourth and fifth place finishes, scoring 44, 47 and 50, respectively. Morgan McCorkell was the highest finisher for the Mavericks. She finished the afternoon with a 55, good for seventh.
PREP TENNIS
FAIRMONT 4, WORTHINGTON 3
FAIRMONT – Fairmont tennis took down Worthington on Tuesday afternoon, 4-3. The Cardinals won one more doubles match to secure the victory.
Tyler Slama and Audrina Suckow picked up the two singles match victories for the Cardinals. Slama beat Daelen Sithad 6-2, 6-0, while Suckow fended off Moo Wah 6-4, 6-3. Leander Nelson and Parker Olsen defeated Nick Martinez and Benjamin Marquardt 6-2, 6-1. The combination of Lilly Ortega and Hudson Clayton proved to be a difference maker in the entire match. Facing Coltin Olmanson and Cristian Miranda, the Fairmont duo won the final two sets after dropping the first, winning 7-5, 6-2 to secure the point.
Fairmont will take on Westonka this Friday at 4:30 p.m.
PREP SOFTBALL
JCC 15, FAIRMONT 3
JACKSON – Jackson County Central scored more than four runs in each of the first three frames to propel past the Cardinals 15-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Fairmont starting pitcher Brylee Miller finished her outing with two innings pitched, with four of her nine allowed runs coming unearned. Lexi Sundeen finished the game with two innings herself. The two combined for five strikeouts. Sundeen scored all three runs for Fairmont with a sacrifice flyout and triple in the right-centerfield gap.
Fairmont returns to work this Thursday with a doubleheader against Redwood Valley.
