Area roundup: Cardinal tennis falls to New Ulm

NEW ULM 7, FAIRMONT 1
FAIRMONT – The New Ulm boys tennis team won all but one match during Thursday afternoon’s contest against Fairmont.
Charlie Weidman beat Tyler Slama 6-1, 1-6, and 10-6. Dan Brownfield took down Jonah Vetter 6-0 and 6-0, Issac Diltmer defeated Lilly Ortega 7-5 and 6-2. Griffin Lehne swept the singles with his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hudson Clayton.
Caden Duel and Grant Simmering provided the lone Fairmont match victory with their 6-1, 6-4 win over Rylan Dueffel and Noah Braun.
PREP SOFTBALL
ST. JAMES – The Fairmont softball team split its doubleheader with St. James Area on Thursday afternoon. The Saints took game one 8-0 off the back of Laney Bowers’ complete game shutout, tossing all seven frames and striking out 16 batters. Fairmont’s Lexi Sundeen took the mound in game two and threw a gem in her own right, shutting out St. James Area while allowing just three hits. Gwyneth Schultz had a two-run home run in the sixth inning to put on the finishing touches.

ALDEN – Martin County West’s Maddie Carlson earned her 500th career strikeout during the Mavericks 15-0 victory over Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Thursday afternoon. Carlson, who got the mark in the first inning, finished the game with three innings and seven strikeouts. Sydney Clow came in the final frame of the contest and struck out all three batters. Both pitchers combined for a no-hitter.
Carlson also charged the offense with a 3-run home run in the fourth inning. Courtney Anderson had three hits while Bailey Larson went a perfect 4-4 at the plate. Rowan Faber had two hits of her own. Addy Wohlhuter and Ida Rohman notched a double and a triple.
GHEC/T/ML 9, MADELIA 8
TRUMAN – The Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther softball team used three runs in the seventh inning to defeat Madelia on Thursday afternoon in Truman. Following Maeson Olson’s single, the Jaguars used a passed ball, a Kyana Thomas double and a Madelia error to bring home the winning runs. Peyton Stohs launched a pop-up to second base that was never caught, allowing Thomas to score and win the contest.
