Area roundup: Fairmont boys hockey falls in sections

MANKATO – The Fairmont boys hockey season ended on Thursday night after its 13-0 loss to Mankato West in the Section 3A Boys Hockey Tournament. The Scarlets scored five and seven goals in the first two periods of the night, outshooting Fairmont 56-9.

The Fairmont Bantam A hockey team finished in second place at this past weekend’s Splash Zone Showdown in Wisconsin. The Cardinals won their first three games of pool play before falling in the championship to the Sauk Prairie Flyers.

Fairmont defeated the Sauk Prairie Flyers to open the weekend, winning 2-1 this past Friday. Goalie Blakeley Scholl had 16 saves. Bennett Draper scored both goals of the day, one off an assist from Logan Droegemueller.

Fairmont opened its Saturday doubleheader with another victory, this time over Winona, 5-1. Goalie Johnnie Frerichs recorded eight saves in the net. Kane Wohlhuter netted a hat trick on the afternoon, while Emmet Olson and Ryder Thate rounded out the scoring.

The Cardinals swept the Saturday action with a hard-fought win over RWD Hockey, 6-4. Fairmont outshot its opponent 23-18. Frerichs had 14 saves. Wohlhuter and Scholl had two unassisted scores. William Egeness and Droegemueller were the other scorers.

Thate scored Fairmont’s lone goal during Sunday’s defeat against the Sauk Prairie Flyers. The Cardinals outshot their opponent 44-17.

 

12U B

The Fairmont 12U B hockey team took home a third-place finish in districts this past weekend after going 2-2.

The Cardinals opened the weekend with losses to Worthington and New Ulm/Sleepy Eye on Friday and Saturday, 5-3 and 9-0. Greyson Amundson, Ellie Steuer and Logyn Luhmann each had a goal against Worthington.

Fairmont began Sunday’s doubleheader with a 5-1 win over Windom. McKinley Weedman, Alayna Kurt and Luhmann each notched a score while Steuer had two.

The Cardinals topped Redwood to finish the weekend strong, winning 10-1. Morgan Ruppert, Charlee Koenecke and Kurt each had two scores. Luhmann, Steuer, Ericka Manwarren and Khloe Bremer had the others.
