Area roundup: Fairmont boys advance in sections with win over Worthington

BOYS HOCKEY
FAIRMONT 7, WORTHINGTON 1
FAIRMONT – The No. 7 Fairmont boys hockey team scored four goals in the opening period to propel a 7-1 victory over No. 10 Worthington in the opening round of the Section 3A Boys Hockey Tournament on Tuesday night.
Gavin Kester had a hat trick by the end of the first period. Noah Meixell was the other first period goal scorer. Jase Meade and Preston Cepress each scored a goal in the second period, while Klay Beemer scored one in the third.
The Cardinals are set to play No. 2 Mankato West this Thursday at the All Seasons Arena.
BOYS BASKETBALL
JCC 84, GHEC/T/ML 54
JACKSON – The Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther basketball team fell to Jackson County Central on Tuesday night, 84-54. Eli Jensen had 16 points to lead all Jaguars. Brody Grathwohl had 12, while Reagan Emmert had seven.
The Jaguars (6-17) will play at St. James Area this Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
GHEC/T/ML 54, LOYOLA CATHOLIC 36
MANKATO – Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther guard Londyn Bowers notched her 1,000th career point during Tuesday night’s 54-36 victory over Loyola Catholic. Bowers matched her 23-point performance with eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Addison Nowicki recorded 10 points and three rebounds, while Keira Benck notched seven points, 12 rebounds and eight steals.
The Jaguars (13-11) square off against St. Clair this Thursday.
