Area roundup: Kolbe earns state girls wrestling bid

Submitted by Adam Williamson: Martin County Area Red Bull wrestler Kate Kolbe (142 lbs.) flexes her first place medal at the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Girls Section 3 tournament this past weekend in Redwood Falls.

GIRLS WRESTLING

REDWOOD FALLS – Martin County Area Red Bull wrestler Kate Kolbe (142 lbs) secured a first-place finish in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Girls Section 3 tournament this past weekend at the Redwood Valley High School.

The junior started her bracket with two Fall victories over Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestler Aubrie Barry and East Ridge’s Ollie Reinbold in the first 30 seconds. She continued to march through competition after earning a Fall win over Elyse Versland from Hastings. Kolbe completed the championship run against her toughest opponent yet, No. 5 Taniah Borney from Eagan. It was another Fall victory for Kolbe, securing the win at 4:59 of the match to seal the first-place finish.

 

GIRLS HOCKEY

LUVERNE 5, FAIRMONT 2

LUVERNE – The Fairmont girls hockey team fell to Luverne this past Saturday, 5-2, at the Blue Mound Ice Arena. Luverne scored the first four goals of the game, including three in the opening period.

Hayln Haycraft got Fairmont on the board in the second period with a goal that cut the deficit to 4-1. The assist came from Lauren Bettin. Facing a 5-1 disadvantage in the final period, Joslyn Meyer gave her team one more score off an assist from Mariel Parish. Goaltender Alexis Sundeen finished with 33 saves.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

FAIRMONT 57, WORTHINGTON 43

WORTHINGTON – Reed Johnson’s 20-point, six-rebound and three-steal performance fueled Fairmont’s 57-43 victory over Worthington on Monday night. The Cardinals have now won 13 straight games to improve their record to 18-2 on the season.

Logan Junkermeier joined his running mate down low with 19 points of his own to go along with six rebounds. Joe Long notched six points and six assists.

Fairmont (18-2) will play Tri-City United tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
