Area roundup: Sundeen eclipses 1,000 saves
GIRLS HOCKEY
Albert Lea 1, Fairmont 0
FAIRMONT – Fairmont girls hockey goaltender Alexis Sundeen reached 1,000 career saves during Monday night’s 1-0 loss to Albert Lea at Martin County Arena.
Sundeen notched a total of 51 saves on the night, including 19 in the first period. Albert Lea’s lone score came in overtime on a power play opportunity. Hanna Austinson found Haley Austinson to win the game for the Tigers.
Fairmont (8-7-2) will play Friday against Morris/Benson Area starting at 7 p.m.
WRESTLING
MARSHALL – The Martin County Red Bulls competed in the Big South Conference Tournament this past weekend in Marshall. The varsity boys team placed fourth (105.5 points) while the girls placed eighth (47.5 points).
Torrey Paplow (152 lbs) and Aaron Becker (215 lbs) earned first place finishes on the boys side. Pierce Rohman (132 lbs) earned second place. DJ Miller (285 lbs) and Kaedin Lange (160 lbs) both earned fifth in their respective weight classes.
For the girls, it was Kate Kolbe (142 lbs) earning a first place finish after beating Marshall’s Yasha Sleiter and Julia Westman from St. James.
Martin County will travel to Luverne High School Tuesday to compete in a triangular starting at 6 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Loyola Catholic 77, GHEC/T/ML 60
TRUMAN – Granda Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther’s Reagan Emmert scored 15 points during the Jaguars Monday night loss to Loyola Catholic, 77-60, at the Truman High School. Eli Jensen joined Emmert with 14 points of his own after draining two 3-pointers. Griffin Studer chipped in 11 points.
The Jaguars (3-8) will play NRHEG this Thursday starting at 7 p.m. in Granada.
Cleveland 75, MCW 61
TRIMONT – Chase Owens scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and seven steals during Martin County West’s 75-61 loss to Cleveland on Monday night in Trimont.
Jackson Wilmes had 15 points of his own, while Knox Larson had nine points.
The Mavericks (1-12) will play Loyola Catholic this Thursday starting at 7 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. James Area 81, MCW 67
SHERBURN – Martin County West’s 44 point second half wasn’t enough to complete the comeback on Monday night, falling to St. James Area 81-67 in Sherburn for its seventh loss of the season.
Maddie Carlson had 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Ivy Olson scored 11 points with nine rebounds.
MCW (6-7) will play at Madelia on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.
