Area Roundup: Fairmont girls beat Rochester

GIRLS HOCKEY

Fairmont 4, RM 1

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont girls hockey team defeated Rochester Mayo this past Saturday, 4-1, at Martin County Arena.

After giving up an early goal to the Spartans, Fairmont rattled off four consecutive scores over the final two periods of play. Alexis Haycraft got the Cardinals on the board initially in the second period, finding the back of the net off a pass from Lauren Bettin. Bettin started the third period with a goal of her own following a pass from Avery Kurt. Harper Artz scored two minutes later on a power play opportunity, assisted by Bettin. Haycraft delivered the final goal with just moments left in regulation, notching the unassisted goal with an empty net.

Fairmont (6-3-1) will continue its season on Wednesday, Dec 31 with a matchup against the River City Blades beginning at 10 a.m.

BOYS HOCKEY

Winona Senior 7, Fairmont 0

WINONA – The Fairmont boys hockey team dropped to Winona Senior this past Saturday night, 7-0, at the Winona Bud Ice Arena.

All seven scores came in the first two periods for the Winhawks, with four of them coming unassisted.

Fairmont (3-3) will continue its season on Friday, Jan 2 with a home contest against Faribault starting at 7 p.m.

PREP WRESTLING

LUVERNE – The Martin County Red Bulls placed eighth in the 2025 Redwood River Riot this past weekend, scoring 98 team points while earning top five finishes in three different weight classes. There were 35 total teams at this event.

Pierce Rohman (139) earned his way to the championship bout after securing three straight technical fall victories. Rohman met Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s David Schuh in the final match of the class, winning via decision after securing nine points in the second period.

Torrey Paplow (152) marched through his competition early, topping Windom-Mountain Lake’s Kameron Koerner in the semifinals with a major decision victory, 15-4. His championship match against Kameron Sather from Dawson-Boyd-Lac Qui Parle-Montevideo United was as competitive as they come. Paplow’s last second reversal scored him two points at the end, winning the contest 6-5 to take home the 152 lb title.

After dropping against New Ulm Area’s Emerson Johnson in the consolation semifinal match, DJ Miller (285) would defeat Colby Kesteloot from Fulda-Murry City Central, 9-3, to earn a fifth place finish in the bracket.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lake Mills 60, North Union 41

LAKE MILLS – The North Union girls basketball team fell to Lake Mills, 60-41, on Monday night. The Warriors have lost three of their past four contests.

Ainsley Ulrich and Shallie Walders each scored 11 points for North Union. Maisey Bierstedt had eight points and seven rebounds.

North Union (5-3) will continue its season on Monday, Jan 5 against Central Springs starting at 6:15 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

North Union 54, Lake Mills 45

LAKE MILLS – The North Union boys basketball team defeated Lake Mills, 54-45, on Monday night to move to 6-2 on the early season.

The Warriors outscored Lake Mills by 15 points during the second and third quarters. Khael Jones and Greyson Colegrove each had 13 points while draining a combined four outside shots and getting 23 rebounds. Lane Bruhn finished with 12 points after knocking down six shots.

North Union (6-2) will play Central Springs on Monday, Jan 5 starting at 7:45 p.m.
