Area Roundup: Red Bulls take home first

PREP WRESTLING

JACKSON – The Martin County Red Bulls took first place at the 2025 Pizza Ranch Invitational this past Saturday at Jackson County Central High School, scoring 143.5 points and placing four wrestlers in the top 3 at their respective weight classes.

Pierce Rohman (139) eased his way to a first-place finish after connecting four consecutive victories via finish, beating Hutchinson’s Judah Perrault via Fall at the 2:38 mark of the match.

Torrey Paplow (152) made easy work of his side of the bracket with victories over Waseca’s Braxton Nelson and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial’s Brody Wieland. He finished things off with a championship win over Adrian Area’s Charger Erlandson via Fall.

An 8-4 decision victory for Aaron Becker (215) over JCC’s Cael Entriken gave him a championship opportunity against Mankato East’s Tyler Thilges. Becker fell to the top-seeded wrestler via Fall, earning a second-place finish.

Like Becker, DJ Miller (285) found himself in a championship bout after breezing through the first three rounds of competition. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial’s Mason Adams got the best of Miller in the final match of the weight class, beating him via fall to secure the 285-pound weight class.

BOYS BASKETBALL

North Union 61, GHEC/T/ML 43

ARMSTRONG – The North Union boys basketball team defeated the GHEC/T/ML boys, 61-43, this past Saturday.

It was a balanced scoring attack for the Warriors, with four players scoring eight or more points. Khael Jones led the way with an impressive 18-point effort on the afternoon. Cole Nicoson finished his day with 16 points after hitting 70% of his 2-point field goal attempts. Greyson Colegrove and Drake Nelson each had eight points, respectively.

Brody Grathwohl led all Jaguars with 15 points.

North Union (5-0) will play Belmond-Klemme tonight at 7:30 p.m. GHEC/T/ML (1-4) will play Cleveland tonight at 7 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GHEC/T/ML 60, North Union 59

ARMSTRONG – The Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther girls basketball team toppled North Union, 60-59, this past Saturday.

Kiera Benck and Londyn Bowers led the Jaguars with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Addison Nowicki chipped in 13.

For the Warriors, Ainsley Ulrich put up 28 points after knocking down four shots from beyond the arc. Shallie Walders had 12 points while Maisey Bierstedt had 11, respectively.

GHEC/T/ML (3-3) will play this evening against Cleveland at home, starting at 5:45 p.m. North Union (4-1) is set to play tonight at 6:15 p.m. against Belmond-Klemme.
