MONTGOMERY — No. 5 Fairmont High School Football team fell to No. 4 Tri-City United on Tuesday night, 21-14, in the opening quarterfinal round of the 2025 Section 3AAA Football Tournament. Despite a late score from the Cardinals’ offense to bring the game within one possession, the comeback effort drew short following a failed conversion on the three-yard line as the clock expired in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Joe Long finished the night 13-34 from the pocket, tossing for 157 yards and completing a 12-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tavian Harvey. Harvey finished with 130 yards on nine catches. Long also rushed for a team-leading 65 yards on 13 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown scramble. The Cardinals ended the contest with a total of 87 rushing yards as a team while picking up 10 first downs.
Tri-City United advances in the bracket to play the No. 1 seeded Waseca Bluejays on Saturday afternoon at Waseca High School. Kickoff for this contest is set to start at 2 p.m.
