Area roundup: Mavericks complete Tomahawk-Valley Championships

MCW/BO boys, girls run at conference championships

WINTHROP – The Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin boys and girls cross country teams finished up conference play on Monday afternoon, placing fifth and fourth in the 2025 Tomahawk-Valley Conference Cross-Country Championships at the Winthrop Golf Club, earning team scores of 128 and 97, respectively.

Mankato Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair won the boys’ race with a team score of 27. Madelia got second with 61, while Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral got 84. Springfield/Cedar Mountain recorded a score of 102. Lester Prairie and Wabasso rounded off the list with scores of 147 and 172, respectively.

For the girls, it was Loyola/Cleveland/St. Clair, who completed the meet sweep with a score of 21. Springfield/Cedar Mountain wasn’t too far behind at 64. Wabasso picked up a score of 83. Finally, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop wrapped things up with a team total of 97, tying the Mavericks.

For MCW/BO, Dominic Dietz (19:54.30) powered all boys with a team-high 19th-place finish. Marek Mulder (21:01.80) and Brody Cook (21:15.30) finished neck and neck at 26th and 27th. Elliot Reynolds (21:21.10) wasn’t too far away after his 29th-place finish. Cody Koerselman (21:52.90) rounded off the top five MCW/BO boys after placing 33rd.

On the girls side, it was Evelynn Christenson (20:40.20) who earned the Mavericks’ top spot after securing a fifth-place finish. Kate Swanson (24:51.10) and Paige Hartwig (25:13.80) were next in line at 27th and 28th. Katelynn Kennedy (25:23.50) and Mirta Garcia (25:28.00) were close behind in 30th and 31st place.

GHEC/T/ML 3, Mankato Loyola 1

MANKATO – The No. 9-seeded Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther girls volleyball team won its first round matchup of the Section 2A Girls Volleyball Tournament on Monday night against No. 8 Mankato Loyola, winning 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-17.

Londyn Bowers powered all Jaguars with 32 kills. Keira Benck and Willow Singleton each had 16 digs. Benck also tallied 38 set assists.

GHEC/T/ML will play No. 1-seeded Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday night in the section quarterfinals. This match will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Peter High School.
