Area roundup: Mavericks down Madelia in 4

PREP VOLLEYBALL

MCW 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA – The Martin County West High School volleyball team defeated Madelia in four sets on Friday night on the road, 24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18. The Mavericks now improve to 16-6 on the year.

Maddie Carlson had a team-high 18 kills and 24 digs. Rowan Faber led all Mavericks with 38 digs. Emily Schettler, Brynlee Haukoos, and Courtney Anderson had 19, 15, and 13 digs, respectively.

MCW finishes the 2025 regular season this Monday against Sleepy Eye on the road. The first set is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Late Thursday

Fairmont 3, Worthington 2

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont High School volleyball team was able to defeat Worthington in five sets, 25-17, 25-27, 27-25, 15-25, 17-15, on Thursday night at the Fairmont High School gymnasium. Leslie Zarling’s 41 set assists were enough to propel her past 1,000 all-time during her Cardinal career. Brylee Miller had 17 kills and 20 digs. Nora Fitzgerald had a team-high 25 digs. Jadyn Montgomery led all Cardinals with 19 kills. Lexi Fuller had 15 digs, respectively.

Fairmont (7-15) will play Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (12-14) next Tuesday in their final regular-season game of the year.

PREP FOOTBALL

TCU 35, Fairmont 7

MONTGOMERY – The Fairmont High School football team fell to Tri-City United on Friday night, 35-7, in Montgomery. The Cardinals fall to 4-3 on the season. The Titans (2-5) scored 21 unanswered points in the last three quarters of play.

Fairmont’s lone score of the night came from running back Dakota Wiley in the second quarter, catching a wheel route pass from quarterback Joe Long before walking into the endzone to cut the lead to 14-7. Wiley ended the night with eight carries for 54 yards.

The Titans rushed for 337 yards and threw for 65, earning 19 first downs. Fairmont tallied 107 total yards on the evening, respectively.

Fairmont finishes the 2025 regular season next Wednesday with another road matchup against St. Peter. Kickoff is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Late Thursday

USC 14, MCW 0

TRIMONT – The Martin County West High School football team fell to United South Central on Thursday night, 14-0, in Trimont. The Mavericks now sit at 1-6 on the season with one more regular-season game on their 2025 schedule.

Quarterback Maddex Faber completed eight passes for 88 yards while rushing for 17, respectively. Pierce Rohman tallied 66 yards on the ground and 33 through the air. Preston Cepress led all MCW receivers with 50 yards on four receptions.

MCW plays next Wednesday in Cleveland (6-0) with the kickoff set to begin at 7 p.m.
