Cardinals bested by Trojans in final moments

FAIRMONT – Thursday night’s boys soccer matchup between Fairmont Area and Worthington was a continuation from Sept 9, where gameplay was stopped with 10:37 remaining in the first half due to lightning in the area.

As resumption of that 0-0 contest began at 7 p.m. at Jeffery Kot Fields, it was the Trojans who pulled away late to take the win, scoring three goals in the final 12 minutes to earn the 4-0 victory.

“Proud of how well they played the game today to the best of their abilities with everything that was going on,” Fairmont head coach Brady Meyer said.

Fairmont goalkeeper Brody Deuel finished the night with 21 saves, knocking down all but three of Worthington’s shots on goal during the combined games.

With the game starting late in the first half, both teams picked up right where they left off, using defense to stall any sort of rhythm and pace.

Worthington broke this by putting one past the net with less than a minute to play before the break. Using a deflection from Deuel saving another shot on goal, Kain Thepmontry put one behind the Cardinals keeper as he tried to recover for the game’s first goal.

“Brody made the save and they [Worthington] picked up the rebound on it,” Meyer said. “We just didn’t have good coverage on that one.”

The Trojans continued this aggression against Fairmont’s defense immediately after the intermission.

Despite Deuel being tested with 17 second half shots on goal, the junior was able to make a handful of key saves to ultimately keep his team in the game. Worthington had a handful of good looks on goal at the 39, 30, 16, and 12 minute mark of the second half, testing the athletic ability of Deuel as he racked up saves.

“Brody definitely had a really nice game today,” Meyer said. “Definitely kept us in the game for most of it. It’s always great to have a good goalie supporting your team.”

However, the Trojans broke through the Cardinals back line with 11:35 left to play. After drawing a penalty deep into Fairmont’s defensive zone, Christian Munoz Montoya capitalized on the free penalty kick with a goal of his own to stretch the lead to two.

The offense didn’t stop there, as Montoya racked up another score following a handful of pretty dribbles in front of the net.

Worthington put on the finishing touches with 45 seconds to play after Cristian Banegas joined the offensive surge with a goal of his own.

Fairmont continues the season on Tuesday with a home match against Marshall at Jeffery Kot Field. Gameplay is set to start at 7 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
