FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Cardinals broke through Wings United 9-0 in a Big South Conference girls soccer game Thursday.
In the first half the Cardinals scored five goals. Makenzie Gerhardt made it 1-0 on an assist from Frankie Martin in the first minute, Mataya Weber scored with help from Lauren Zarling in the 13th minute, her sister Lianna Weber had her turn next on an assist from Emma Pockrus in the 18th minute. Zarling would then have her moment to score in the 27th minute, with an assist from Gerhardt.
Lianna Weber made her second goal of the game with a little over two minutes left in the first half off an assist from Abbie Simpson.
The second half had several goal scorers from the first half strike again. Mollie Leiding started the half strong with a goal within two minutes of play resuming, off an assist from Gwyneth Schultz. Martin, who assisted the first goal of the game, got two goals of her own in the 46th and 51st minutes, with assists from Grace Kotewa and Leiding, respectively.
Mataya Weber scored the final goal of the game with around five minutes left, getting an assist from Nola Thedens.
The Cardinals (7-3-2) have their next game Tuesday, Sep 23, versus Marshall at the SMSU Track and Field Turf.

MARTIN LUTHER – Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther volleyball fell to Alden Conger on Thursday night at Martin Luther. The Jaguars fell in straight sets, 18-25, 20-25, 20-25.
Keira Benck led the team in assists and digs with 23 and 15. Londyn Bowers had 17 kills, 13 digs, and one block. Ava Donohue went a perfect 13 for 13 on serves while picking up one ace.
GHEC/T/ML (4-6) competes in a tournament this weekend at United South Central with eight other teams invited.
