Area roundup: Cardinals volleyball sweeps Bluejays

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Fairmont 3, Waseca 0

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont High School volleyball team took down Waseca in straight sets on Thursday night, winning 27-25, 25-16, 25-14.

Brylee Miller led the Cardinals with 17 digs while going seven for nine on serve attempts. Leslie Zarling had 29 set assists to go with four aces of her own. Makayla Lowry had three kills and nine digs with two aces. Lexi Fuller had eight digs.

The Cardinals (5-6) continue the season this Saturday with a varsity invitational held in the Tri City United High School gymnasium.

GHEC/T/ML 2, Madelia 3

GRANADA – Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther High School volleyball fell to Madelia on Thursday night, losing in five sets 27-25, 19-25, 25-13, 19-25, 11-15.

Londyn Bowers left the match midway through the second set with an injured finger, ultimately ending her night early. Keira Benck had 27 set assists with seven kills and three aces. Addison Nowicki had a team high nine kills. Willow Singleton had 26 digs. Ava Donohue had seven kills, one block, and five aces.

GHEC/T/ML (4-4) continues the 2025 campaign next Tuesday at Martin County West.

GIRLS SOCCER

Fairmont 3, TCU 2

MONTGOMERY – Fairmont Area girls soccer powered past Tri City United on Thursday night with a 3-2 victory.

Abbie Simpson got things started for the Cardinals with a goal at the 26 minute mark in the first half, using an assist from Makenzie Gerhardt to break the ice. Simpson continued her scoring ways with another at the 29 minute mark of the second half, again using a Gerhardt pass to put one past the net. Gerhardt finished off the Fairmont scoring effort with a goal of her own off a pass from Grace Kotewa three minutes later. Goalkeeper Addie Folkerts had 13 saves.

Fairmont (5-2-2) plays this Saturday with a home competition against Loyola Catholic at Jeffery Kot Fields.

PREP TENNIS

Fairmont 7, River Valley 0

SLEEPY EYE – Fairmont High School girls tennis swept River Valley, 7-0, on Thursday night at Sleepy Eye.

Fairmont’s Emelia Klanderud beat Taylor Berkner 6-1, 6-3. Ella Wubbena topped Selene Krohnfeldt with a pair of 6-0 set victories. Carly Gustafson defeated Chloe Okerman 6-3, 6-4. Katherine Zelaya completed the singles sweep while defeating Lexy Nelson 6-0, 6-0.

Allison Slama and Madi Peyman defeated Tori Matter and Delaney Rex 6-0, 6-0. Bel Lutterman and Ella Dresselhaus topped Bronwyn Sorenson and Alison Danielson 6-0, 6-3. Addison Toothaker and Ada Edmundson beat Jazzy Robertson and Alayna Beyer 6-2, 6-1.

Fairmont continues their season this Monday at New Ulm High School.
