Area roundup: Fairmont girls tennis sweeps

PREP TENNIS

Fairmont 7, Luverne 0

FAIRMONT – Fairmont High School defeated Luverne on Tuesday afternoon in a Big South Conference tennis meet with a dominating 7-0 victory.

After winning all four singles matches, the Cardinals kept their momentum rolling into doubles play.

At No. 1 singles, Emelia Klanderud picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Addyson Mann. At No. 2 singles, Alison Slama defeated Hannah Kempema 6-0, 6-0. Ella Wubbena won Fairmont’s No. 3 singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sophia Remme.

Carly Gustafson defeated Lauren Peters 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Madisyn Peyman and Katherine Zelaya bested Elizabeth Mulder and Jessika Tunnissen 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 doubles, while Belinda Lutterman and Cadleigh Jobe used a big third set to top Makayla Oechsle and Bergen Ask 1-6, 7-5, 10-4.

Addison Toothaker and Ada Edmundson also needed a late comeback over Luverne’s Gracyn Woodley and Lilly Lanoue to take the No. 3 doubles match, winning 2-6, 6-0, 12-10.

The Cardinals come back to the courts on Thursday at Blue Earth. Matches are set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Fairmont 3, SJA 0

ST JAMES – Fairmont High School bested St. James Area on Tuesday night in straight sets: 25-20, 25-21, 25-18.

Brylee Miller led the Cardinals with nine kills, tacking on eight digs, while Nora Fitzgerald had 13 digs. Leslie Zarling recorded a team-high 22 set assists alongside seven digs. Annaliese Rahm and Makayla Lowry tallied three ace blocks of their own also for Fairmont, while Harper Artz went 17 for 18 on serves with three aces.

The Cardinals return to action Thursday with a home contest against New Ulm. The opening serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

MCW 3, ML 0

TRIMONT – Martin County West High School topped Mountain Lake on Tuesday night in three consecutive set victories: 25-15, 25-18, 25-16.

Maddie Carlson led the team with 14 kills, tacking on nine digs in the process.

Emily Schettler powered all Mavericks with 24 set assists.

Rowan Faber had 21 digs on the night.

The Mavericks’ next contest is Thursday night against Alden-Conger. The competition is set to begin at 7 p.m.

North Union 3, North Iowa 0

ARMSTRONG – North Union bested North Iowa in straight sets: 26-24, 25-19, 25-20.

PREP FOOTBALL

Late Friday

GHEC/T 38, WWG 36

WESTBROOK – Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman opened up its season with a 38-36 overtime victory over Westbrook/Walnut Grove on Friday, Aug 29.

Quarterback Reagan Emmert tallied 253 yards and three touchdowns through the air and on his feet during the season opener.

Running back Bowan Sill picked up 156 yards and two touchdowns in the span of his 13 carries. Still tacked on 70 more receiving yards and another touchdown, respectively.

Wide receiver Griffin Studer had two catches for 37 yards.

The Jaguars continue their season on Saturday against Edgerton. Kickoff is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Truman High School.
