Ocampo, Amoah power Eagles past Fairmont

FAIRMONT – The New Ulm High School boys soccer tandem of senior Jackson Ocampo and junior Methodious Amoah powered the Eagles to an 8-0 victory over the Fairmont Area boys on Tuesday night.

The pair combined for five goals and four assists in the team’s winning efforts at Jeffery Kot fields. New Ulm outshot the Cardinals 13 to four on the night. Fairmont goalkeeper Brody Deuel ended his night with five saves.

“It was a tough one,” Fairmont head coach Brady Meyer said. “New Ulm is a tough team in our conference. We knew going into it this was going to be a fight.”

After both teams felt each other out in the first five minutes of the contest, Ocampo struck a thunderous goal from the left side of the field during a transition opportunity, clashing with the right side of the net to open up his scoring barrage.

New Ulm and Fairmont traded corner kick opportunities near the 27-minute mark of the first half, with each defense holding its respective ground.

The Eagles struck again with 18 minutes left in the first half. Ocampo rattled his second goal of the night following a smooth pass by Amoah from the left side of the box.

Following some stifling defense from Fairmont for the next nine minutes of play, New Ulm jumped again on the offensive end by scoring a flurry of goals before the halftime buzzer rang.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, it was Amoah’s turn to put one past the net. The forward found the ball in front of him deep into Cardinal territory following another surge of Eagle offense generated by Ocampo.

After a few crafty dribbles, the junior scathed the ball past Deuel’s fingertips for his first goal of the contest.

Lightning struck twice six minutes later.

Ocampo again returned the favor to Amoah after his previous assist, feeding the striker for his second and final score of the contest.

“They [Ocampo and Amoah] have been playing soccer together for a long time,” New Ulm head coach Tim Plocher said. “They know the positions well. When Methodious is in the middle, he knows when to look to the sides, and Jackson knows when to make his runs. Even without communicating, they are in sync.”

New Ulm continued its scoring attack in the second half, tacking on four more goals from three different players.

Senior Joshua Shaneman started things off for the Eagles at the 31-minute mark with a goal deep into Fairmont’s side of the field.

Ocampo finished off his stellar day 13 minutes later. After gathering himself in front of the net, the senior bicycle-kicked a ball high over the reach of Deual for his third and final goal of the evening.

Sophomore Jace Lohman and Shaneman scored the remaining two goals for New Ulm in the last 16 minutes of the contest to balloon the lead even further.

Despite the loss, Meyer saw a lot of leadership from his team both on and off the field. From giving a player advice to cheering each other on, these actions resemble those of a team led by both its coaches and players.

“That’s one thing we have been really pushing, supporting our teammates,” Meyer said. “That’s our second rule, actually, is to support your teammates. We don’t want it just coming from us and talking to each other, but also on the field.”

Fairmont continues its season on Thursday with a road match against Waseca. Kickoff is geared to start around 7 p.m. at Waseca High School Stadium.
