Martins rally in 8th to down Redbirds
LUVERNE — Thanks to a six-run eighth inning, the Fairmont Martins ended their regular season with a 7-1 win over the Luverne Redbirds on Friday night in an amateur baseball game.
Spencer Chirpich was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Fairmont bats, while Levi Becker was 2 for 4 and Luke Becker was 2 for 5.
Chirpich got the start on the mound for Fairmont and went seven innings, allowing seven hits and no walks for one earned run while striking out six. Nate Soelter pitched two innings in relief and allowed two hits and no walks for no runs while striking out three.
After a Chirpich groundout scored Soelter for the first run of the game in the fourth, Luverne tied it in the seventh on an error.
Then came the eighth, where Fairmont racked up seven of its 11 hits in the game. That eighth inning came at the expense of Luverne reliever Ben Serie, who took the loss in three innings of work.
Serie allowed all of his hits and runs in that eighth and struck out three.
Luke Becker started Fairmont’s rally in the eighth with a one-out single. After a groundout had two outs in the inning, the Martins were relentless with an RBI single to left by Soelter breaking the tie. Lance Becker then doubled in another run for a 3-1 Fairmont lead before Levi Becker singled to keep the hit parade going.
Chirpich singled in Lance Becker before Arnaldo Malave doubled in two more for a 6-1 Fairmont lead. Bryce Borkenhagen popped a single into center field to score the final run of the game before Serie finally ended Fairmont’s rally with a strikeout.
Luverne had nine hits in the game, getting two each from Jacob Stroh, Ethan Beyer and Serie.
Fairmont, now 10-2, begins playoff action Friday in New Ulm.
