NEW ULM — The Fairmont Junior Legion baseball team dropped to New Ulm VFW Silver 12-7 Thursday night at Mueller Field in New Ulm. Fairmont’s four errors and handful of wild pitches cost the team early, with the team unable to climb back from the deficit.

Fairmont fell behind early in the first. After Fairmont went down quickly on offense, New Ulm tallied four runs on their own off of a pair of hits. Three of Fairmont’s four errors came in this frame alone.

“Something was wrong with our mitts, I think they were cursed tonight,” Fairmont head coach Steve Stone said. “We had a really good catcher in there and the ball kept popping out every time. Lots of errors and low energy from our players.”

Heading into the top of the fourth, down 5-1, the Fairmont bats found some life. Mac Larson started off the rally with a single, advancing later on a sacrifice fly and immediately putting pressure on the New Ulm defense.

Taking advantage of some miscues from the New Ulm defense, Fairmont rattled off a handful of singles from Owen Terfehr and Merritt Pomerenke, eventually knotting the game at five apiece.

Showing resilience and toughness to even the game up, Stone wasn’t shocked in his team’s ability to come back.

“They are used to that,” Stone said. “They have done it a lot of times over the years. We have a never-give-up attitude, so there is anytime where they can come back. We have some really good bats”

This rally was quickly diminished, however, when New Ulm came to the plate next.

A hit batter and a pair of walks quickly loaded the bases for New Ulm. Led by Parker Ranweiler, New Ulm rattled off three consecutive hits to counter the Fairmont rally. New Ulm finished the bottom of the fourth with seven more runs, taking a 12-5 lead.

While Fairmont was able to string together a couple of runs in the top of the fifth, it seemed to be too little, too late for another comeback.

Ultimately, Stone saw a lack of fire from his Fairmont squad that produced a lot of unforced errors and mental lapses. He hopes his troops can rally going into the weekend.

“More energy and a short memory,” Stone said. “We are going to forget about this. We got a double header Saturday in Hutchinson. Just reload and restart.”

That game starts at 11 a.m. as the first game of a doubleheader.
