FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Martins’ winning streak is now at five as they routed Lakefield 18-0 Wednesday night in an amateur baseball game.

It started small for the Martins. With two outs, Lincoln Becker hit a single and Joey Crissinger smacked a double to bring Becker home. A lineout would keep it at 1-0.

The third was when things got out of hand, as the Martins’ bats got hot. Nate Soelter hit a single and stole second while Becker walked. Crissinger continued to have the winning touch, this time crushing a triple to score Soelter and Becker. Landen Meyerdirk walked and Levi Becker popped out far enough to score Crissinger.

It picked up from there as Bryce Borkenhagen singled to drive home Meyerdirk. After an Arnaldo Malave single, a wild pitch to advance Malave and Borkenhagen, and Joseph Hackett hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. The Lakefield pitcher lost Luke Becker, and Borkenhagen scored on the walk.

Errors supplied the last three runs of the inning. In his second at-bat, Soelter reached on an error with Malave scoring, pinch-runner Vincent Schultz got home on a wild pitch as Crissinger took the walk, and Luke Becker scored on a wild pitch. The inning ended with a line-out, with the lead ballooning to 9-0.

The fifth started with a single by Soelter, a fly-out, and a strikeout. With two outs, the Martins poured it on. Meyerdirk singled and a hit by Nolyn Goerdt drove Soelter home. Borkenhagen was hit by a pitch, and a wild pitch scored Meyerdirk. Malave hit a single placed well enough to bring in both Borkenhagen and Goerdt. Two consecutive batters reached on errors, scoring Malave.

A flyout ended the fifth at 14-0. The sixth provided one final opportunity for the Martins to go big. Nick Sandberg slapped a double and Crissinger walked, providing Goerdt and Borkenhagen each an RBI opportunity they took advantage of with singles.

Malave walked to load the bases. A strikeout put them down two outs, but Luke Becker clutched a single to score Goerdt and Borkenhagen together for a second time. A strikeout swinging ended the inning at 18-0.

Lakefield had been stymied all day, but with one out, a potential rally formed from a single, hit by pitch, and second single to load the bases. Cameron Scholten slammed a ball to center field. It was caught for the second out, but a laser beam throw preserved the shutout as the runner got tagged out at home on a bang-bang play at the plate.

On the other side of the ball, Jack Hested pitched a complete game for the Martins. He kept Lakefield at bay all game, allowing no runs with four strikeouts.

The Martins (6-1) have their next game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Worthington Cubs on Trojan Baseball Field.

Starting at $2.99/week.
