Madsen earns clay target state championship
PRIOR LAKE — Fairmont’s Ethan Madsen finished his time in the Clay Target State Tournament on Friday with a state-championship performance at the Minneapolis Gun Club, shooting all 100 targets he saw to tie for first place overall in the male individual division.
After finishing the first session of the individual competition with a round-one score of 25 straight targets hit, Madsen did it again in the second round to close out the first session. He then shot another 25 straight in round one of the second session and another 25 straight in the second round of the second session to be one of just three boys to do so at state. LeSueur-Henderson’s Marcus Berger and Lakeville South’s Mitchell Kelvie were the other two to do so.
The Fairmont boys also saw Dane Breitbarth finish strong individually by shooting 97 out of 100 targets. He shot 22 targets in the first round of Session 1 before finishing with 25 straight in the second round. Then in the first and second rounds of Session 2, Breitbarth hit 50 targets in a row to finish with his 97, tying him for 23rd place individually.
Fairmont’s Cole Nawrocki finished individual competition by hitting 91 out of 100 targets, with a 25 straight to open the tournament in round one of Session 1. He finished tied for 73rd overall individually.
Fairmont started the tournament with the team competition, finishing 37th out of 39 teams. Madsen hit 96 out of 100 targets (T24th) in the team portion of the tournament, while Nawrocki hit 92 targets (T108th) and Breitbarth hit 91 targets (T128th). Zayden Werner hit on 83 of 100 targets (T180th), while John Carr hit 82 targets (T182nd).
Martin County West/Trimont sent one girls shooter to the individual portion of the tournament in Teya Schmidtke. Schmidtke finished her first round by hitting 25 straight targets in Session 1 before finishing with 23 in the second round. She then hit 23 and 24 in the first and second rounds of Session 2, respectively, to finish with a 95, which tied her for seventh place in the girls individual competition.
