ST. MICHAEL — Oliver Tordsen and Nelson Remington put together record-breaking performances for the Fairmont boys while Macy Hanson earned her second state tournament medal overall and her fifth in her career at the Class AA state track and field meet on Thursday. The standout performances helped the boys to a 10th-place finish out of 56 teams sending athletes to the event, while the girls placed 16th out of 53 teams.
Tordsen set a Class A record in the discus to earn his second medal of the meet after placing second in the shot put on Wednesday. He threw a distance of 191-08 in the event, beating out runner-up Samuel Ruid of St. Francis by more than four feet.
Tordsen will continue to build on his impressive performances at Dakota State University in the fall. While he’s set the bar high with his high school performances, he’ll have lofty expectations heading to Madison, S.D.; his oldest brother, Connor, is top 10 in the University’s record books in the discus, shot put and hammer throw.
Torden’s teammate, Hank Artz, also finished 15th in the event with a distance of 137-07.
A day after taking fourth place in the 3200 meters at 10:59.43, Hanson added to her extensive collection of state medals in the 1600 meters on Thursday. In her first time racing the event, Hanson ran a time of 4:53.53 to bring home the silver.

“It’s so fun. You think about it so much, but when it actually happens, it’s just amazing. I just can’t really believe it right now, it’s still not real,” Hanson said. “I was just trying to stay relaxed and calm because that’s what works best for me. So I wasn’t really thinking about it [being my last high school race], just kind of letting my body do the work.”
Heading into the race, Hanson said she wanted to start out in the back before working her way up as the race went on. She finished only behind St. Peter’s Keira Friedrich’s time of 4:51.90 and beat out a pack of Willmar’s Lauren Eilers, Chisago Lakes’ Annika hall, Northfield’s Makayah Petricka and Alexandria’s Kasey Soderholm, who all crossed the line at 4:55.
Thursday was Hanson’s first time competing in the 1600 at the state level, she said she felt comfortable heading into the race because these were all runners who she had competed against before.
While the medal closed the book on Hanson’s prep career, she’s far from done racing; she’ll continue her track and field career at the University of Minnesota in the fall.
Nelson Remington competed in four wheelchair events for the Cardinals on Thursday, with the 200, 400 and 1600 meters, as well as the discus. Nelson’s 29.89 finishing time in the 200 meters was a state record, and his 1600-meter time of 4:49.16 was a Class AA record. He also placed first in the 400 meters at 1:02.97 to earn his third gold medal of the day and finished as the discus runner-up at 35-03.
Ellie Perkins medaled for the Cardinals in the pole vault, taking fifth place at 11-06, while Harper Artz rounded out Fairmont’s medalists with a time of 59.55 in the 400 to take home eighth place.
In the boys 4×800-meter relay, Fairmont’s crew of Carter Hanson, Jordan Thompson, Jaydon Putney and Brier Lenort placed 10th at 8:11.39.
Fairmont’s boys team put together a score of 29.5 at the meet to place 10th. Becker and Alexandria took home the top two spots with 64 and 61 points, respectively, while Monticello rounded out the podium with 52 points.
On the girls side, Fairmont tied Tri-City United and North Branch Area for 16th with 23 points each. Alexandria, Mankato West and Monticello took the top 3 slots with 82, 57.5 and 45 points, respectively.
