Area roundup: Fairmont hits highs at state competitions

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

ALBERTVILLE – Fairmont had their fair share of success during the first day of the Minnesota State AA Track and Field Championships Wednesday.

Two events, the girls 3200 and boys shot put, had their finals Wednesday. Oliver Tordsen took second out of 21 competitors with a 55-foot, 3-inch throw, a personal best. Hank Artz took sixth with a 51-foot, 8.25-inch throw.

Macy Hanson finished fourth out of 22 competitors with a 10:59.43.

For prelims Wednesday, Harper Artz took seventh in the girls 400 with a 58.76, advancing to the finals Thursday.

Unfortunately, it was the end of the road for some Fairmont state competitors.

Jeremiah Lebbi finished 16th in the boys 100 prelims with a time of 11.19 seconds.

Jase Meade took 19th in the boys pole vault with a 12-foot, 6-inch vault.

Nathaliah Johnson, Addison Toothaker, Mollie Leiding, and Harper Artz finished 15th in the girls 4×200 relay with a 1:45.93.

Toothaker, Artz, Macy Hanson, and Madi Thompson finished 21st in the girls 4×400 relay with a 4:08.98.

Caleb Chambers, Jaydon Putney, Dakota Wiley, and Brier Lenort took 17th in the boys 4×400 relay with a 3:31.34.

Those who advanced and those who have yet to compete get their shot Thursday starting at 9 a.m.

BOYS GOLF

BECKER – Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West concluded their golf season with Day 2 of the Class A State Golf Tournament Wednesday.

MCW’s freshman Knox Larson finished in the top 40, tied for 39th with an overall 167 final score. He stayed consistent, shooting an 84 on Day 1and 83 on Day 2.

GHEC/T/ML’s senior Landon Zimmer slid from Day 1, tying for 48th with a 169 final score. After shooting an 81 on Day 1, he finished with an 88 on Day 2.

PREP BASEBALL

EAGLE GROVE 10, NORTH UNION 8

EAGLE GROVE – The North Union Warriors fell to Eagle Grove 10-8 in a Top of Iowa Conference matchup Wednesday.

Eagle Grove got the jump on North Union, leading 5-1 after the second. North Union had a big four-run third inning to put them even, but Eagle Grove hit back with a five-run fourth. While North Union would chip away, they could not come all the way back.

Cole Nicoson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Colin Cruse went 0 for 2 with two RBIs and one run.

In 5 1/3 innings of work, Colin Kruse had four strikeouts and only three earned runs allowed.

The Warriors (4-6) have their next game Friday against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at 7:30 p.m. on Bancroft Memorial Park.
