Area roundup: Local boys faring well at state golf

BOYS GOLF

BECKER – With Day 1 of the Class A State Boys Golf Tournament in the books, representatives from Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West put in strong showings on Tuesday.

There are 88 golfers vying for the top spot. The top score is currently a 72, with several ties throughout the field.

GHEC/T/ML senior golfer Landon Zimmer is currently tied with three other golfers for 26th with an 81. He’ll enter Day 2 in a battle with other Section 2A opponents New Ulm Cathedral’s Owen Strei and Sleepy Eye United’s Nolan Kucera.

MCW freshman golfer Knox Larson isn’t far behind with an 84, tied with four golfers for 39th.

Both golfers are in the top half of state competitors as they head into the final day of competition.

Larson will start Day 2 first, with Brandon Brown of Cass Lake-Bena and Gavin Rieck of Southwest Minnesota Christian, Edgerton at 12:16 p.m. Zimmer will begin afterward with Blake McMullen of Mahnomen-Waubun and Josiah Frost of New Life Academy of Woodbury at 12:24 p.m.

PREP SOFTBALL

NORTH UNION 16, WEST HANCOCK 3

BRITT – On the road, the North Union Warriors beat Top of Iowa Conference opponent West Hancock 16-3 Tuesday.

North Union set the pace, beginning with a 3-0 lead in the first and five runs in the third. West Hancock scored three in the fourth to keep things interesting, but North Union slammed the door on them with an eight run top of the seventh that West Hancock was not able to answer.

Kyla Irmiter went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Ainsley Ulrich, Brylie Deim, Shallie Walders, Aslynn Sobolik, and Ariana Giddings each had two RBIs. Ulrich had three runs, Deim, Walders, and Sobolik had two runs, and Giddings had one run.

Pitching the full game was Ainsley Ulrich. She had 14 strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

The Warriors (8-1) play Wednesday at Greenwood Park Softball Field against Eagle Grove at 6 p.m.

LATE MONDAY

NORTH UNION 12, LAKE MILLS 10

NORTH UNION, Iowa – The North Union Warriors were victorious over Lake Mills 12-10 in a close Top of Iowa Conference game Monday.

After a 1-1 start in the first, North Union exploded with seven runs in the third, making it 8-1. While North Union would continue to score in short bursts, Lake Mills began to catch fire in the fifth and sixth, making it 12-7 going into the final inning. While their rally would muster three runs, they could not come all the way back and North Union secured the win 12-10.

Ainsley Ulrich went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and one run. Maisey Bierstedt went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, while Brylie Deim went 0 for 2 with two RBIs and one run.

In a complete game, Ulrich had nine strikeouts and seven earned runs allowed.

PREP BASEBALL

WEST HANCOCK 7, NORTH UNION 5

BRITT, Iowa – The North Union Warriors fell to West Hancock in a tight 7-5 Top of Iowa Conference ballgame Tuesday.

Each team would put runs up sparingly over the course of seven innings. They were 2-2 after the second and 5-5 at the top of the sixth. West Hancock broke the tie with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and North Union could not mount a comeback.

Max Merrill went 3 for 4 with one RBI and one run. Colin Kruse went 2 for 3 with one RBI and one run.

With five innings of work, Merrill had four strikeouts and only three earned runs allowed.

The Warriors (4-5) have their next game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. versus Eagle Grove at Greenwood Park Baseball Field.
