FAIRMONT — After the close loss Wednesday, the Fairmont Martins left nothing to chance and crushed Heron Lake 20-1 in seven innings of an amateur baseball game Friday.
The game ended in the seventh due to the 10-run lead rule.
The game was put away in the first with 17 Fairmont runs coming across. With a single and a walk to start off the inning, Eli Anderson hit a single to bring home Landon Meyerdirk. A double from Josh Soelter got both his brother Nate Soelter and Anderson home. A single by Spencer Chirpich and double by Levi Becker scored Josh Soelter and Chirpich.
A flyout and lineout meant there were two outs with the score at 5-0. With the pressure on, Fairmont exploded. Joseph Hackett was walked and Meyerdirk, in his second at-bat, was hit by the pitch. With the bases loaded, Nate Soelter smacked a ball deep into the outfield for a triple, scoring Becker, Hackett and Meyerdirk.
Anderson hit a triple to bring in Nate Soelter. The Heron Lake starting pitcher was pulled at this point, but the run continued. Josh Soelter walked, and Lincoln hit a single to bring in Anderson and Soelter. Consecutive singles by Bryce Borkenhagen and Joseph Hackett scored Lincoln Becker and Chirpich.
The final big blow would be done with consecutive doubles by Landon Meyerdirk and Nate Soelter, on their third at bats of the inning. Meyerdirk scored Levi Becker and Borkenhagen, while Soelter brought home Hackett and Meyerdirk.
A strikeout stopped the bleeding at 17-0.
With the lead securely in hand, the offense slowed on both sides for the remainder of the game. For townball games, the mercy rule goes into effect after the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the third, a double and single by Nate Soelter and Josh Soelter, respectively, scored Hackett and Meyerdirk. A pop out and lineout ended the inning at 19-0.
Heron Lake showed a spark of life in the top of the fourth. They led off with a single, a batter hit by a pitch, and a fielders choice single. With one out, a single by Edwin Oquendo scored Stevie Meyer to make it 19-1. A strikeout looking and lineout ended the run there.
The nail in the coffin came after a triple by Vincent Schultz. A single by Borkenhagen drove Schultz home, and made the final score 20-1.
On the mound for Fairmont, Lance Becker had three strikeouts and one run allowed in four innings. Arnaldo Malave pitched in relief for the Martins and in three innings had five strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
The Martins (2-1) have their next game June 11 at 7:30 p.m. against Windom at Island Park in Windom.
