Area roundup: MCW, GHEC golfers qualify for state

MADELIA – One golfer from the Martin County West Mavericks and Granada Huntley East Chain-Truman-Martin Luther Jaguars qualified for the Minnesota Single-A Golf Finals Monday.

Neither school had qualified as a team, so the four who made it past day one had to be in the top five individual golfers not on the winning team. GHEC’s Landon Zimmer and Gavin Kester were with MCW’s Knox and Kale Larson were those four looking to advance.

Zimmer and Knox Larson both made it to the top five and secured their advancement, tying with 164’s each. Kester and Kale Larson finished ninth and twelfth with a 166 and 170 respectively.

Both boys advancing will play Tuesday, June 10 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, with the earliest tee time being 7:30.

GIRLS GOLF

MADELIA – The Martin County West Mavericks and Granada Huntley East Chain-Truman-Martin Luther Jaguars both had their seasons end Monday.

They were in the same boat as the boys, with Elsa Thompson and Josie Moeller for GHEC-T-ML and Morgan McCorkell for MCW needing to finish in the top five to advance.

Thompson took twelfth with a 222, while Josie Moeller finished twenty-second with a 239. McCorkell took twentieth with a 233.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

LATE SATURDAY

MANKATO WEST – The Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin Mavericks and Granada Huntley East Chain-Truman-Martin Luther Jaguars had their state qualifier track meet Saturday.

For MCW:

Berent (Bear) Kosbab was the sole qualifier for state with a second place finish in the 100, running a 11.25. He also placed fourth in the 200 with a 22.97.

Kosbab, Lixon Forsberg, Kale Larson, and Lucas Larson took fourth in the 4×200 meter relay with a 1:35.21.

Barret Scholl finished fifth in the shot put with a 45-foot, 3-inch throw.

For GHEC:

Aiden Stith took seventh in the high jump with a 5-foot, 8-inch jump.

The MSHSL Single-A Track State Finals will start at St. Michael-Albertville High School with prelims beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10. Qualifiers from there will compete Wednesday, June 11 at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

LATE SATURDAY

MANKATO WEST – On the girls side, MCW/BO and GHEC-T-ML had solid finishes, but no state qualifiers Saturday.

For GHEC:

Londyn Bowers took third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 with a 12.92 and 26.64 respectively.

For MCW:

Evelynn Christenson finished ninth in the 1600 with a 5:43.90.

For the girls teams, the season has completed.

SOFTBALL

LATE SATURDAY

NORTH UNION 6, FOREST CITY 2

SWEA CITY – The North Union Warriors continued their winning streak to start the season by beating Top of Iowa conference opponent Forest City 6-2.

The Warriors got out to an early lead, making it 3-0 after the first. Additional runs in the third and fourth made it 6-0. Despite a 2-run rally by Forest City, the Warriors clamped down and secured the victory.

Shallie Walders went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and one run. Ainsley Ulrich, Olivia Price, and Maisey Bierstedt each got one RBI on one hit.

In a complete game, Ulrich had 10 strikeouts, with only one earned run and walk given up a piece.

The Warriors (3-0) have their next game Tuesday against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire at 7 p.m. in Ruthven.

BASEBALL

LATE SATURDAY

FOREST CITY 4, NORTH UNION 1

BANCROFT – The North Union Warriors fell to Forest City 4-1 in a Top of Iowa Conference matchup

Forest City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring one run in innings three and seven. North Union fought back in the bottom of the seventh, but accrued three outs while leaving only one run on the board to end the game.

In 6.1 innings, Greyson Colegrove had nine strikeouts and only three earned runs.

Max Merrill went 1 for 3 with one run.

The Warriors (2-2) have their next game Tuesday against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire at 6 p.m. in Ruthven.
