NORTH MANKATO – After winning the first game 6-5 to stay alive, the Martin County West Mavericks fell to United South Central 6-0 in the second game to become the MSHSL Section 2A runner-up.

In the first game, the Mavericks had to recover from a 5-0 deficit from the first inning. Emily Anderson went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. This includes the tying run on a single and winning run, which Anderson brought in via a line-out. Lillie Schultz and Maddie Carlson each went 1 for 4 with one RBI and one run. Hannah Rosenberg went 2 for 4 with two runs.

In relief, Sidney Clow had three strikeouts and gave up no hits and only one walk across 6 and 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Hannah Rosenberg went 2 for 3. Maddie Carlson had 10 strikeouts and allowed only three earned runs.

LATE WEDNESDAY

NORTH UNION 11, NORTH IOWA 0

BUFFALO CENTER – To start out their season, the North Union Warriors no-hit Top of Iowa Conference opponent North Iowa in five innings 11-0.

The offense got the lead out quickly, leading 5-0 after the first and 11-0 after the second. Neither side would score for the rest of the game.

Ainsley Ulrich, Shallie Walders, and Kyla Irmiter had two RBIs each, going 2 for 4 with two runs, 1 for 3 with two runs, and 0-1 with one run respectively.

Ulrich also secured the no-hitter, accumulating nine strikeouts over four innings of work.

The Warriors (1-0) have their next game vs Forest City at 6 p.m. on the North Union Middle School Softball Field.

LATE WEDNESDAY

NORTH UNION 14, NORTH IOWA 2

BUFFALO CENTER – In the second game of two straight against Top of Iowa Conference opponent North Iowa, the North Union Warriors came out on top 14-2 in five innings.

The Warriors opened up the game 4-0 after four innings. An explosion came in the fifth, as they rattled off 10 runs to make it 14-0. North Iowa sought to rally back, but a two-run bottom of the fifth ended the game 14-2.

Carson Crouch went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and one run, while Wiley Stevens went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and one run. Max Merrill went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and one run. Every batter for North Union recorded at least one run.

Caden Walters had five strikeouts and no earned runs over 4.1 innings.

The Warriors (2-1) have their next game Friday vs Forest City at 7:30 p.m. in Bancroft Memorial Park.

BOYS GOLF

GHEC/T/ML, MCW BOYS EACH MOVE 2 ON

NORTH MANKATO — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West boys golf teams competed in the first round of the Section 2A Boys Golf Tournament Thursday at North Links Golf Course, with both teams advancing two golfers onto Monday’s final round.

The top four teams, Cedar Mountain (340), Sleepy Eye United (341), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (354) and Alden-Conger (357) advanced to Monday’s final round, along with the next best five individuals not from those teams and anyone within five strokes of the fifth-best individual qualifier not on the top four teams.

GHEC/T/ML finished eighth with a 376, while MCW finished 11th with a 389.

GHEC/T/ML’s Gavin Kester carded a fourth-place score of 79 on Thursday to move on to Monday’s finals, while teammate Landon Zimmer shot an 82 to tie for ninth and qualify. MCW’s Kale Larson shot an 82 to tie for ninth and qualify for Monday’s finals, while teammate Knox Larson shot an 85 to advance to Monday.
