BUFFALO LAKE – The Fairmont Cardinals finished fourth Wednesday in the opening round of the Section 3AA Girls Golf Tournament, earning a spot in next Wednesday’s final round.
By finishing in the top five, the whole team will compete next week in the finals.
Leslie Zarling led the way for Fairmont on Wednesday with a 92, followed by Katherine Zelaya with a 96. Carly Gustafson shot a 102 also for Fairmont, while Joslyn Miller shot a 112, Kailyn Miller shot a 117 and Ingrid Edman shot a 121.
The Cardinals play in the section final round at Buffalo Lake on May 28. Time of play is to be determined on May 26 at 8 a.m.
NORTH UNION
PRIMGHAR – In the girls 1A regional tournament Wednesday, North Union’s Alexis Cummins was unable to advance to the state tournament.
She finished ninth with a 95. Due to her team not advancing to this round, she needed to finish in the top 2 of individual players. Those two players finished first and third, locking Cummins out.
The girls golf season is finished for North Union.
PREP SOFTBALL
MCW 14, MVL 2 (5 innings)
WELCOME — Third-seeded Martin County West rolled 14-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran in the opening round of the section 2A Softball Tournament on Wednesday.
Maddie Carlson earned the win for the Mavericks in four innings, allowing two hits and two walks for two unearned runs while striking out four. At the plate, Rowan Faber had two hits and five RBIs, while Emily Schettler had two hits and two RBIs. Bailey Larson had a hit and an RBI, while Carlson had a hit and an RBI.
MCW (18-3) plays the winner of sixth-seeded Nicollet and 11th-seeded Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Friday.

FAIRMONT
ST. PETER – Two individuals and two doubles from the Fairmont Cardinals were defeated on Day 1of the Tennis Section 2A tournament Wednesday.
Anthony Stegge and Tyler Slama made it out of the first round, beating Will Salvati and Tor Erdahl of Mount Westonka 6-2, 6-0. After winning the first set, Stegge and Slama lost to Cameron Thomas and London Johnson of Southwest Christian 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The boys tennis season is finished for Fairmont.
