Fairmont sweeps Redwood Valley

ABOVE: Fairmont’s Owen Terfehr scores the final run as a pinch runner in the 10-0 six-inning Cardinals Game 1 win.

FAIRMONT — In a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader Friday, Fairmont beat Redwood Valley 10-0 in 6 innings and 11-3, working through cold temperatures, wind and occasional rain.

The temperature dipped into the 40s, with 25 mph winds. Fairmont head coach Don Waletich said it didn’t seem to have much of an effect on his players.

“We’ve had a lot of these games earlier this year,” he said. “The conditions aren’t great, but the kids, doesn’t seem to bother them too much. We try to practice outside as much as we can. I was really proud of them. They had really good energy today.”

The scoring started early for Fairmont in Game 1. With no outs in the bottom of the first, Joey Crissinger and Jensen Livesay hit singles to drive in leadoff and second batters Josh Soelter and Joseph Hackett. With two outs, Luke Haefner singled to send home Joey Crissinger, and Fairmont took a 3-0 lead.

Bats continued to strike in the second. After Joe Long reached on a single, stole second, and got to third on a sacrifice bunt, he ran home on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Livesay brought Josh Soelter home to make it a 5-0 game.

After two scoreless innings, a double from Luke Haefner drove in Jensen Livesay in the fifth. Merritt Pomerenke opened things up with a double scoring Mason Bicknase and Tyler Kurt. Soelter sent Pomerenke home on a single, but the game-ending run was left on base and the score stood at 9-0.

With a single by Crissinger and double by Livesay, Kurt struck while the iron was hot and sent pinch runner Owen Terfehr home to end the first game.

Luke Haefner was the pitcher to hold Redwood Valley scoreless in game one, throwing three strikeouts and only allowing 5 hits.

Heading into the second game, Waletich said he was looking to continue seeing good fundamental baseball.

“Do what we do,” he said. “Play defense, have our hitting and good pitching.”

Fairmont followed through, winning Game 2 by eight runs. Jensen Livesay went 3 for 3 with three RBI and one run, Joey Crissinger went 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Josh Soelter went 3 for 4 with two RBI and three runs.

In four innings of work, Vincent Schultz had four strikeouts and gave up only 3 hits.

Fairmont (16-1) faces Marshall next in the Big South Conference Championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Marshall Legion Field.
