Area roundup: Fairmont falls to St. James in 2A tennis matchup

ST. JAMES — The Fairmont Cardinals came close, but fell just short in a Section 2A playoff matchup versus St. James Wednesday.

Leonardo Fortin beat Rylan Meyer in the second match 7-5, 6-3, while Oliver Thedens beat Tristan Shores 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth match to make it 2-2. Anthony Stegge and Tyler Slama bested Dylan Reid and Caleb Fast 6-3, 6-2 in the first doubles match, but Fairmont lost the last two doubles matches to make it 4-3.

The Cardinals team’s season is finished, but individual state playoff matches begin at Gustavus Adolphus College Wednesday, May 21 at 10 a.m.

SLEEPY EYE — The Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin (MCW/BO) Mavericks and Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (GHEC/T/ML) Jaguars finished sixth and seventh in the Tomahawk Valley Conference Championship Thursday.

For the Mavericks, Berent (Bear) Kosbab finished first in the 100 and 200 with a 12.07 and 24.00 respectively. Kosbab, Lucas Larson, Kale Larson, and Lixon Forsberg finished first in the 4×100 relay with a 46.34.

Forsberg, Kale Larson, Lucas Larson, and Josh Roben took fourth in the 4×200 relay with a 1:39.80.

Roben, Mason Menssen, Bradyn Thate, and Bentley Muller nabbed fifth in the 4×400 relay with a 4:04.78.

Barret School got third in the shot put with a 41-foot, 1-inch throw.

Hank Olson took fifth in the discus with a 110-foot, 5-inch throw.

Lixon Forsberg got fourth in the triple jump with a 35-foot, 11.5-inch jump.

For the Jaguars, Jackson Madsen finished third in the 100 with a 12.50.

Aiden Stith tied for fourth in the high jump with a 5-foot, 6-inch jump.

The Mavericks and Jaguars will have their next meet Thursday, May 22 vs each other and United South Central in Wells at 3 p.m.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

For the Mavericks, Evelynn Christenson finished third in the 1600 with a 6:04.54. Christenson, Callie Koerselman, Inga Olson, and Braelynn Borchardt nabbed fourth in the 4×400 relay with a 5:07.81.

Avery Sanders, Thea Larson, Reese Peters, and Ava Thate took fourth in the 4×100 relay with a 58.09.

Maddison Lyon, Inga Olson, Katelynn Kennedy, and Evelynn Christenson got third in the 4×800 relay with a 11:53.84.

For the Jaguars, Londyn Bowers finished fourth in the 100 and 200 with a 14.26 and 29.40. Bowers, Norah Chase, Cecilia Nowicki, and Ashley Singleton got fourth in the 4×200 relay with a 2:00.09.

Lynsie Salic got third in the discus with a 100-foot, 7-inch throw.

The Mavericks and Jaguars will have their next meet Thursday, May 22 vs each other and United South Central in Wells at 3 p.m.

MANKATO — The Martin County West (MCW) Mavericks lost to Mankato Loyola 16-6 and 8-3 in a Valley Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

In the first game, Preston Cepress went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Noah Meixell went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

In the second game, Maddex Faber went 1 for 3 with 3 RBI. In relief, Colsan Andersen gave up no runs and had four strikeouts.

The Mavericks (3-11) have their next game Friday at 4:30 p.m. vs Windom Area in Welcome.

FORT DODGE – The North Union Warriors placed fourth amongst six teams in the 1A Golf Sectional Qualifier Wednesday.

Drew Henderson finished first individually with a 68, nine strokes lower than second place’s 77. Cole Nicoson placed eighth with a 85.

While the Warriors as a team did not advance, Drew Henderson is the number one individual qualifier from his section, and will play in the regionals at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars Monday, May 19 at 10 a.m.
