Joe Long no-hitter lifts Cards by JCC

ABOVE: Fairmont’s Joseph Crissinger crosses home as one of 10 runs scored by the Fairmont Cardinals during Tuesday’s home game against Jackson County Central.

FAIRMONT — Fairmont pitcher Joe Long showed command over his repertoire by no-hitting Jackson County Central on Tuesday as the Cardinals earned a 10-0 shutout in five innings of a Big South Conference baseball game.

The game ended in the fifth due to the 10-run lead rule.

Only two base runners were allowed all game by Long and the Cardinals. An error in the third put Carson Doescher on base, but that was nullified by Long striking out Thomas Liepold and getting Kash Gilbert to line out.

Walking Ben Gallagher in the top of the fourth inning was followed by three consecutive outs. Gage Johnson struck out swinging, Gallagher was caught stealing by catcher Joseph Hackett and Carson Kolander struck out looking.

Assistant Coach Levi Becker said Hackett has had plenty of experience behind home plate and utilizes it well.

“He’s been a part of these no-hitters before,” he said. “He plays a huge part in that, the way he works back there. He’s throwing runners out, his percentage is really high this year.”

Long had 10 strikeouts, including striking out the side in the second inning and to finish the game in the fifth.

Being able to get ahead in counts bolstered Long as the game went on.

“Your confidence gets up,” he said. “The command feels stronger.”

While he said he pitched pretty good, Long gave plenty of credit to his defenders.

“They’re playing really well out there,” he said. “The catcher catching everything. Pretty much whenever they put in play, our defense is right on top of it. Fly balls, ground balls, doesn’t matter.”

On the offensive side, the Cardinals started strong 2-0 after the second inning. In the first, Josh Soelter singled, stole second, made it to third on a lineout and got home after a sac fly by Joseph Crissinger. Joe Long hit a triple in the second to bring home Merritt Pomerenke.

The gap opened up in the third. A single by Luke Haefner brought Crissinger home. After advancing to second on a lineout to third, Haefner got home courtesy of Owen Terfehr. Long got his second RBI on a double, scoring Terfehr and taking a 5-0 lead.

Cardinal batters took advantage of 10 at-bats in the fourth. Terfehr and Pomerenke hit singles to take advantage of base-loaded situations, with Terfehr driving in Crissinger and Pomerenke getting Brayden Williamson and Mason Bicknase home.

The next two at-bats closed it out, with Long singling Crissinger home and a Soelter double driving in Pomerenke to make it 10-0.

The Cardinals (14-1) have a doubleheader next at home against Redwood Valley starting at 4 p.m. Friday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
