Area roundup: Cardinals tennis falls to Waseca

WASECA 7, FAIRMONT 0

FAIRMONT – Thursday, the Fairmont Cardinals spring tennis team fell to Waseca 7-0 in a Big South Conference tennis match.

Anthony Stegge fell to Tyler Jellum in the No. 1 singles match 7-6, 6-1, while Leo Fortin was defeated by Henry Huttemier 6-4, 6-2. Jonah Vetter was beaten by Otto Schoenrock 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 singles match, while Zach Ashland lost the No. 4 singles match to Allen Kopetzki 6-1, 6-1.

Dominick Lund-May and Tyler Slama fell to ARmaan Bhatti and Keenan Collins in the No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 6-2, 12-10, while Wylee Frederiksen and Oliver Thedens fell to Tommaso Scognamiglio in the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, 6-3. Lilly Ortega and Simone Castro fell to Lucas McQuery and Brodyn Hoof 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles match.

Fairmont’s next match is at Redwood Valley at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

In the No. 1 singles match, Anthony Stegge fell to Ryder Dutton 6-3, 7-5, while Tyler Slama defeated Devin Haase 6-2, 6-2.

PREP BASEBALL

FAIRMONT 3, ST. JAMES 1

ST. JAMES – The Fairmont Cardinals defeated the St. James Saints 3-1 Tuesday in a Big South Conference baseball game, moving to 7-1 on the season.

Leading the Cardinals was Mason Bicknase, who went 3 for 4 and had an RBI, Josh Soelter, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Luke Haefner, who went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Bicknase struck out 14 through seven innings, allowing one run.

The Cardinals’ next game is Thursday, where they will host Windom for a 5:30 p.m. game.

CLEVELAND 9, MCW 3

WELCOME – The Martin County West Mavericks fell to Cleveland 9-3 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division baseball game on Tuesday.

Leading the Mavericks was Jacob Wilmes, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Cam Meyer went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Preston Cepress went 2 for 2 scoring two runs, while Lucas Larson struck out two through five innings, giving up 11 hits and nine runs. Jerry Olson came on in relief striking out two through two innings, allowing no hits.

The Mavericks (2-6) head to Fairfax to take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game.

BOYS GOLF

Cardinal Boys take 10th at St. Peter Boys Invite

ST. PETER – The Fairmont Cardinals boys golf team placed 10th at Shoreland Country Club on Tuesday after shooting a 377. St. Peter ultimately won the meet, shooting a 321.

Klay Beemer shot a 90 for 30th place, while Macklain Anderson shot a 91 for 33rd. Tyler Heckman shot 95 for 35th place, while Hudson McKean and Christian Selbrade shot a 101 tying for 50th. Jalin Jackson finished 57th after shooting a 105.

The Cardinals next meet is at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Redwood Falls Golf Club.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

Mavericks show promise at St. James Invitational

ST. JAMES – The Martin County West Mavericks participated in a St. James Invitational on Tuesday, with the boys placing fifth with 52 points and the girls placing sixth with 29 points.

For Fairmont in the boys 100-meter dash, Bear Kosbab placed first after running an 11.65.

Kosbab placed first in the boys 200-meter dash, running a 23.25

Brody Cook finished eighth in the boys 3,200-meter race, running a 13:27.51, while Dominic Dietz placed 10th (13:56.7).

Evelynn Christenson placed third in the girls 3,200 with a time of 13:07.55.

The team of Kosbab, Mason Menssen, Bradyn Thate, and Lixon Forsberg placed third in the boys 4×100 with a time of 47.94.

In the girls 4×100 the team of Avery Sanders, Ava Thate, Tayavia Maokhamphio, and Thea Larson placed fourth with a time of 1:02.56.

The team of Bentley Muller, Forsberg, Kane Wohlhuter, and Menssen took fourth in the boys 4×200 with a time of 1:45.45.

In the girls 4×200 the team of Peyton Bryant, Sandy Tomas, Jocelyn Perez Marroquin, and Maokhamphio placed fourth with a time of 2:15.17.

In the girls 4×800, the team of Macie Kneeland, Braelyn Borchardt, Perez Marroquin and Christenson placed third with a time of 12:25.14.

In the boys shot put, Hank Olson took fifth with a throw of 36 feet, 9 inches.

Mylee Larson placed eighth in the girls shot put with a throw of 25 feet, 1.5 inches.

Olson took third in the boys discus with a throw of 106 feet, 2 inches.

Mylee Larson placed third in the girls discus with a throw of 77 feet, 10 inches, while Sophia Peterson placed sixth with a throw of 70 feet, 7 inches.

Forsberg placed fifth in the boys long jump clearing 17 feet, 3.5 inches.

In the boys triple jump, Forsberg placed second with a jump of 36 feet, 2.5 inches.

The Mavericks next meet is the Sentinel Relays on Friday at 4 p.m.
