Area roundup: Jags rally in five to advance over USC

TRUMAN — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars got their first playoff win in the bag against United South Central in a five-set battle that ended 18-25- 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-9 in the section 2A volleyball tournament Monday night.
Leading the Jaguars was Londyn Bowers with 22 kills. Nine digs, three blocks, and four aces, while Madisen Lewis put up nine kills, six digs, and two blocks. Lindsey Diegnau put up six digs and two blocks and Keira Benck added 21 assists, while Harley Geistfeld went 14 for 14 serving on the night.
“We’re going to need to get some more offense out of everybody else on the net,” said Jaguars head volleyball coach TJ Williams. They’re trying to take a little pressure off of her, but we should utilize it when we can when we can get her [Bowers] the ball. That was just a fluke, the slow start tonight dropping two sets out the gate was just a fluke Yeah, it’s not how we normally play. We usually come out strong, and if we do drop one, it’s usually the third set.”
The Jaguars head to Mayer Lutheran on Thursday to take on St. Peter for the next round of the tournament.
MCW 3, ATWATER-COSMOS-GROVE CITY 2
TRIMONT – The Martin County West Mavericks took on Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, taking the win after a two-hour-long battle that ended 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 15-7 in favor of the Mavericks on Monday.
Leaders for the Mavericks were Emily Anderson with 26 kills, 22 digs and two assists, while Maddie Carlson added 19 kills, 30 digs and two assists on the night. With them was Gianna Chase with five kills, four digs, and a block, while Meia Schuett added two kills and two digs. Courtney Anderson had 20 digs on the night, while Addy Wohlhuter tacked on an assist and four digs. Rounding out the squad was Cami Clow, who added three digs on the night.
The Mavericks head off to Minnesota Valley Lutheran to take on Cleveland at 6 p.m. Thursday for their next match.
