FAIRMONT – The Fairmont girls tennis team secured a 5-2 victory against Worthington in a Big South Conference tennis match on Monday, gearing up for the upcoming postseason.

“Today we tried different combinations in doubles against Worthington,” said assistant girls tennis coach Tim Slama. “We have a strong feel for where our team stacks up in singles, but doubles can be more difficult finding the right partners and right combinations. We moved Carly Gustafson and Ella Wubbena to No. 1 doubles and they played great together pulling out a win. Madi Peyman and Claire Brockmann moved from No. 1 doubles to No. 3 singles and No. 4 singles and both pulled out a win.”

Emelia Klanderud won her No. 1 singles match against Hannah McNab 6-1, 6-2. Despite the powerful serve of McNab, Klanderud was able to maintain her composure and use her ability to place the ball in hard to reach areas to secure the win.

Allison Slama faced off against Chloe Martinez in the No. 2 singles match and secured the win 6-1, 6-1 courtesy of her solid serves and excellent ball control.

Madisyn Peyman switched over to singles on the day, taking on Emma Heitbrink in the No. 3 singles match and securing the 6-0, 6-0 win with some help from solid footwork and court awareness.

Claire Brockmann won her No. 4 singles match against Lily Brown 6-2, 6-3. Brockmann was able to maintain control of the match with her quickness and control of her shots.

The new combination of Wubbena and Gustafson in the No. 1 doubles match against Mykayla Phouangphet and Sadie Nickel showcased a combination of solid serves and excellent defense to secure the Wubbena-Gustafson victory 6-2, 6-3.

Sam Thatcher and Ivy Schomberg lost their No. 2 doubles match against Eleanor Teerink and Kah Blu Moo 7-5, 6-4. Despite battling hard and forcing the seventh point, the Fairmont duo was unable to close the match out.

Emily Wheeler and Hailey Greely lost their No. 3 doubles match against Ashley Esparza and Tiana Garcia 3-6, 6-2, 7-10. After dropping the first set, Fairmont’s No. 3 duo rallied back in the second to force a third set in which they fought hard for every point before their opponent was able to end the match.

“We’ve had a great regular season so far with a record of 9-6 with a very young team,” said Tim Slama. “A sophomore at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, a seventh-grader at No. 2 singles and freshman at No. 3 singles. We’ve tried multiple lineup options to have our best lineup ready for the post season and we will be ready to compete against USC in the first round next Monday.”

The Fairmont girls’ next match is Tuesday at Luverne before heading to the first round of the postseason Monday against United South Central.
