Martins come out swinging at state, down Farming Flames 14-4
JORDAN – Back at the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons, the Fairmont Martins continued their state dominance on Saturday with a 14-4 win in eight innings over the Farming Flames at the Mini Met.
The bats were hot for the Martins as they had six players with RBIs and eight players with at least one hit. The strong attack helped the Martins end the game early in eight innings due to the 10-run lead rule, with an RBI single from Tyler Tennyson scoring the 10th and final run in the bottom of the eighth.
The 10-run win means the Martins will move on to the third-and-final weekend of the state tournament and return to Jordan for a 4 p.m. Saturday game against the 11C champion Sartell Muskies. The Martins need a win Saturday and two more on Sunday to qualify for the state championship game on Monday.
Derek Shoen went 4 for 5 with three RBIs to lead the Fairmont bats, while Spencer Chirpich went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Jon Traetow went 2 for 4 also for the Martins, while Lance Becker, Lincoln Becker, Tennyson, and Ethan Hurn all added an RBI to their season tally.
Despite leading 1-0 after a Shoen RBI single in the third, the Martins fell behind in the top of the fourth 3-1. The Martins took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, however, after an RBI single by Hurn and a wild pitch scored two more runs for a 4-3 lead.
The Flames tied it in the fifth, but Shoen quickly gave the Martins the lead back in the bottom of the inning and scored later on a wild pitch for a 6-4 lead. Shoen kept the Martins active on the bases with singles in the third, fifth and sixth innings, and his RBI single in the fifth gave the Martins the lead for good.
Chirpich pitched six innings and got the win for Fairmont, allowing seven hits and a walk for three earned runs while striking out eight. Windom draftee Collin Lovell pitched two innings in relief for the Martins and allowed one hit for no runs while recording two strikeouts.
