MCW season ends in playoff loss to Greyhounds

NEW ULM — The No. 13-seeded Martin County West had its hands full with fourth-seeded New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday at Johnson Park as the Greyhounds racked up 17 hits for a 17-0 win in five innings.

MCW got two hits in the loss, one from Cameron Meyer on an infield single in the first and one by Lucas Larson on a single to right field in the fifth.

Larson took the loss for the Mavericks in four innings, striking out one.

The Mavericks finish the year with a 1-15 overall mark, while the Greyhounds host Mankato Loyola on Tuesday.

BOYS GOLF

Fairmont boys advance pair to Day 2 of 3AA tourney

BUFFALO LAKE — The Fairmont boys golf team finished 10th out of 15 teams on Day 1 of the Section 3AA Boys Golf Tournament at Oakdale Golf Club on Thursday, qualifying two individuals to next week’s final round.

Marshall won the first round of the tourney and were followed by New London-Spicer (311), Minnewaska Area (318), Luverne (319) and Morris Area-Chokio (319).

Fairmont shot a 337 total.

Advancing to next Wednesday’s final leg for Fairmont were Mathew Cone and Harmon Schrunk. Cone turned in a 79 on Thursday to tie for 12th, while Schrunk shot an 82 to tie for 24th.

Also for Fairmont on Thursday, Hudson Mckean shot an 85 to tie for 39th, Macklain Anderson shot a 91 to tie for 60th, Christian Selbrade shot a 98 to tie for 74th and Tyler Heckman shot a 131 to take 89th.

The top five teams and next 14 individuals not on the top five teams advanced to Day 2.

PREP SOFTBALL

LSH 5, Fairmont 2

FAIRMONT — Fifth-seeded Le Sueur-Henderson knocked off fourth-seeded Fairmont 5-2 on Thursday in the second round of the Section 2AA Softball Tournament.

The loss drops Fairmont to elimination play, where it will play Tri-City United at 2 p.m. Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The winner of that game plays at 4 p.m. the same day, while the loser’s season comes to an end.

Fairmont scored first in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Ilana Moeller, but the Giants capitalized on three singles and four Fairmont errors to score all five runs in the top of the fourth. Brylee Miller scored Fairmont’s second run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a passed ball.

Miller ended up singling, walking three times and scoring a run to lead Fairmont. Nevaeh Rahm started in the circle for Fairmont and pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out three. Miller pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while fanning three.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

Fairmont boys, girls take 3rd at Big South Championship

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont boys and girls track and field teams both finished third out of six schools at the Big South Conference Large School Championships on Thursday at Bob Bonk Track.

Marshall won both sides of the meet. The Fairmont boys had 121 points, while the girls had 136 points.

For the Fairmont boys, Jeremiah Lebbi took third in the 100 (11.19), while Gavin Artner took fifth in the 1,600 (4:35.68). Landon Gilbertson took fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.7), while Jaron Schutz took fifth in the event (16.95). The Fairmont boys 4×100 relay team of Elijah Johnson, Blaze Geiger, Allon Chen and Lebbi took second (44.17), while the 4×200 relay team of Nolan Schultze, Caleb Chambers, Connor Gronewald and Gage Borntrager took second (1:33.79). Oliver Tordsen took second in the shot put (49-1.5) and second in the discus (147-8), while Tytan Tumbleson took fourth in the high jump (5-11), Borntrager took second in the pole vault (12-11) and Isaiah Lockwood took fourth in the triple jump (38-11.5).

For the Fairmont girls, Bella Larson took fourth in the 100 (13.49), while Harper Artz took first in the 200 (26.86) and third in the 400 (1:02.07). Macy Hanson took first in the 1,600 (5:02.43) and second in the 3,200 (11:57.22), while Cadence Leiding took third in the 100 hurdles (17.06) and Bella Schroeder took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.21). Cadence Leiding also took third in the 300 hurdles (50.53), while Nora Fitzgerald took fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.71). The Fairmont girls 4×200 relay team of Larson, Emelia Klanderud, Mollie Leiding and Artz took second (1:51.95). Ellie Ortega took second in the shot put (34-10) and fifth in the discus (93-5), while Kennedy Becker took fourth in the shot put (33-4.75), Ellie Perkins took fourth in the pole vault (J9-7) and Abbie Simpson took third in the triple jump (32-8.5).
