SHERBURN — Sophomore forward Emily Schettler dished out 12 assists to help the Martin County West Mavericks claim the lead in the first half and they never looked back Monday night.

No. 2-seeded Martin County West defeated the No. 7-seeded United South Central Rebels 58-33 during Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal basketball action in Sherburn.

Schettler finished the game with six points and four boards to go with the dozen dimes, helping her team get easier looks throughout the night.

With the victory, Martin County West (19-6) advances to face off with No. 3-seeded Springfield (15-11) at 7:45 p.m. Thursday night in a South Sub-Section semifinal at St. Peter High School.

Springfield defeated No. 6-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey by a 75-58 decision to gain the next round of the postseason.

Mavericks’ head coach Cliff Anderson was pleased with the ball movement.

“Schettler gives 110 percent all the time and you know she stepped in really well while Liv’s (Borchardt) been out with injury, so she’s doing a good job for us making sure everyone’s moving and she hits the open teammate,” Cliff Anderson said.

The Mavericks fell behind early in the game 8-2, but with Schettler finding the open player, they closed the gap quickly.

Junior Emily Anderson was great as well with 15 points on 8 of 12 field-goal shooting on the night to go with her seven boards and five dimes.

An Emily Anderson trey-ball halfway into the first half provided the Mavericks with an 11-8 lead and they settled into a flow after that.

The passing of Schettler and Emily Anderson enabled the Mavericks to get easy looks around the rim all game.

After reclaiming the lead, the Mavericks were on a roll to finish the first half, taking a 27-12 lead into the break.

Freshman forward Maddie Carlson showed composure throughout the night for the Mavericks, going 8 of 10 from the floor and finishing the night with a game-high 16 points.

Maddie Carlson did most of her damage in the second half, while extending the lead, going 5 of 5 in the period.

Ella Carlson got gritty in the paint, grabbing six boards and four steals for Martin County West. Ella Carlson ended the game with eight points as well on 4 of 8 splits.

As for the Rebels, after coming out firing with three straight makes from freshman guard Olivia Bungum, the team went quiet.

Bungum ended the game with 12 points on 6 of 18 shooting to go with her four boards and five steals for the Rebels. The Mavericks hounded her on the perimeter, making her job near impossible.

Her partner in the backcourt, junior Taylor Schroeder, led the team in scoring with 13 points including three ‘and-1’ finishes.

Schroeder also did solid work on the defensive end with two blocks and four steals.
