SHERBURN — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars defeated the Martin County West Mavericks 63-43 Saturday night in Sherburn.

Jaguars’ 6-foot-6 senior forward Carter Fox led the way with 16 points to go with his 14 boards, four assists and three blocks during the Valley Conference game.

Fox did it all during the win, snatching boards and flying up court to find a teammate or make something happen for himself. The highlight of the game was a coast-to-coast one-handed jam from Fox late in the second half.

The game began with little offensive flow from either team with the score remaining under 10 points for both teams during the first 10 minutes of play.

The first half was foul-laden and neither team found much success on the interior. Inconsistent shooting at the charity stripe didn’t help either squad.

Maverick post player Jacob Wilmes got off to a rough start from the field, but ended the first half strong with 10 points. Wilmes finished with a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds.

Maverick guard Kale Larson totaled 13 points to go with his five boards including a nice ‘and-1’ lay-in during the first half.

Guard Hunter Schmidt pitched in seven points including a deep 3-pointer from four feet beyond the arc for MCW during the first half.

The first half ended with the Jaguars holding a 28-26 advantage. They would take control of the affair in the second half.

Jaguar guard Brody Grathwohl provided a massive punch off the pine. Grathwohl ended the night with 12 points on 5 for 9 shooting from the floor.

Freshman guard Eli Jensen nailed a 3-pointer and shot perfectly from the line to finish the game with five points for the Jaguars.

Helping Fox on the interior was junior forward Jackson Madsen. Madsen bruised and battered the opposing post players which contributed to their low shooting percentage. He compiled eight points to go with his six boards and two assists. He provided a nice presence in defending Wilmes of the Mavericks most of the night.

With the win, the Jaguars improved their record to 9-13 on the year.

Following the loss, the Mavericks slipped to 4-18 on the season.
