Mavericks, Jaguars capture non-league basketball wins

SHERBURN — Liv Borchardt and Ella Carlson delivered stellar numbers to engineer the Martin County West Mavericks’ 59-40 basketball triumph over the Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Wolverines during non-league action Monday night in Sherburn.

Borchardt tossed in a game-best 16 points, pulled down eight rebounds, blocked five shots and doled out four assists in the win.

Ella Carlson netted a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 14 boards to complement three assists, while Maddie Carlson scored 13 points.

Courtney Anderson contributed nine points for the Mavericks, while Emily Anderson chipped in seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.

The Mavericks made 22 of 56 shots from 2-point range, 3 of 6 behind the 3-point arc and 6 of 10 from the free throw line.

EllaMae Peters scored 11 points for the Wolverines, while Ashlyn Pfeiffer chipped in eight points.

Martin County West (13-4) plays host to Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons in a rare 6 p.m. tipoff Friday night in Sherburn.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 67, St. James 58 — McKenna Benck scorched the Granada gymnasium nets for a career-high 32 points to propel the Jaguars to a nine-point nonconference win over the Saints on Monday night.

McKenna Benck also grabbed six rebounds, while teammate Olivia Mattson hauled in a game-leading 15 rebounds to complement seven points and a game-best six assists.

Londyn Bowers tossed in 10 points for the Jaguars, while Keira Benck supplied eight points, four rebounds and four steals.

Jacey Swanson tallied 16 points to top the Saints, while Journey Swanson scored 13 points.

The Jaguars (14-4) travel to Madelia on Friday night for a Valley Conference contest.

Boys Basketball

St. Clair 75, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 59 — Carter Fox posted game-high statistics but it wasn’t enough to help the Jaguars defeat the Cyclones during Valley Conference action Monday night in St. Clair.

Fox poured in 28 points, garnered eight rebounds, blocked five shots and pocketed three steals to top the Jaguars’ performance.

Bryce Borkenhagen supplied nine points and seven boards for the Jaguars, Jackson Madsen netted seven points, while Eli Jensen chipped in six points and three steals.

Austin Ward tallied 24 points to pace St. Clair’s winning effort, while teammate Conner Whittet contributed 19 points.

The Jaguars (6-12) play host to Alden-Conger on Thursday night in Truman.

Cleveland 79, Martin County West 68 — The Clippers captured an 11-point victory over the Mavericks during Valley Conference play Monday night in Trimont.

No individual or team statistics were provided by either team.

Martin County West (3-16) hits the road to St. Clair on Thursday night for another conference contest.
