Four Red Bulls gain finals as Wabasso wrestling invite

WABASSO — Martin County Red Bulls grappler Pierce Rohman moved up a weight class at Saturday’s Wabasso Invitational and the final result proved the same — a gold medalist.

Rohman, who’s ranked No. 9 at 121 pounds in Class AA, produced two major decisions and one regular decision to capture the 127-pound individual championship in Wabasso.

Rohman, who was one of only seven Red Bulls wrestling in the event, helped guide Martin County to a sixth-place team showing of 116 points — only three behind host Wabasso and 5.5 behind fourth-place St. Clair/Mankato Loyola.

Rohman compiled a 10-0 major decision over Luverne’s Rayden Boyenga in the quarterfinals, bested Tri-City United’s Keegan O’Meara by a 10-2 margin in the semifinals before downing Wabasso’s Kaysen Harms, 9-2, for the championship.

Maddex Faber, Berent Kosbab and Taylor Austin each contributed second-place showings to the Red Bulls’ effort, Colby Schwichtenberg chipped in a third-place finish, while Hank Olson finished fifth.

Faber opened the 145-pound bracket with a 7-4 quarterfinal win over Luverne’s Leif Ingebretsen, pinned Redwood Valley’s Max Dillon in the semifinals in 3:26 and lost a 7-0 decision to St. Clair/Loyola’s Eli Kruse in the championship clash.

Kosbab coasted to a 15-5 major decision over TCU’s Toren Kelly in his 152-pound first-round clash before pinning Quad County’s Gage Wilke in the quarterfinals in 3:49.

Kosbab outdueled St. Clair/Loyola’s Brody McClinton in the semifinals by a 14-10 decision before losing a 9-6 decision to St. James Area’s Levi Miest in the finals.

Austin kicked off his day at 172 by disposing of Quad County’s Owen Chervany in 52 seconds during opening-round action before posting an 8-1 win over Worthington’s Levi Hennings.

Austin edged Blue Earth Area’s Kade Gaydon by a 7-3 semifinal decision before Luverne’s Sam Rock squeezed out a 9-8 decision over Austin in the finals. Gaydon went on to pin St. Clair/Loyola’s Lucas Vaughan in the 172-pound third-place bout in 3:25.

Schwichtenberg needed just 21 seconds to pin Quad County’s Breck Martin in the heavyweight quarterfinals.

Schwichtenberg then got pinned by St. James Area’s Willie Curry in the semifinals.

Curry went on to pin Benson’s John Kobberman for the gold medal in 2:20, while Schwichtenberg needed only 37 seconds to flatten Wabasso’s Josh Timm in the third-place match.

After getting pinned in his opening match, Olson rallied to pin his way to the fifth-place medal. Olson downed Ortonville’s Owen Dorry in 42 seconds in their consolation match, pinned St. Clair/Loyola’s Steven Loeffler in 2:01 before earning the slap of the canvas in 57 seconds over St. Clair/Loyola’s Cooper Garlow in the fifth-place bout.

Cooper Peterson and Timmy Nagel each matched Blue Earth Area teammate Kade Gaydon by claiming third-place medals to pace the Bucs’ eighth-place team total of 72.

Peterson garnered a 12-5 decision over Luverne’s Hudson Hough in the 139-pound bracket for the Bucs, while Nagel earned a 6-2 win over Luverne’s Ty Koop in the 114-pound division’s third-place match.

The Red Bulls travel to Waseca tonight for a Big South Conference dual meet, while Blue Earth Area plays host to St. James Area on Thursday night.
