SHERBURN — The Martin County West Mavericks downed the Mankato Loyola Crusaders 56-35 Friday night to notch their 11th win of the year.
Maverick forward Liv Borchardt filled the stat sheet, finishing the night with 16 points to go along with eight boards, five assists and three steals.
It was a bit of an off shooting night for MCW forward Emily Anderson. Anderson shot 4 of 10 from the floor, but finished with 13 points, six boards, five assists and four blocks.
“It was good to see Liv play really well tonight and then Avery Sanders hit some nice shots for us to get us going in the first half,” MCW head coach Cliff Anderson said. “All those girls play well together and some nights, some girls aren’t hitting their shots and the other girls will pick them up, but it was good to see from Liv and Avery.”
Sanders hit three timely mid-range jumpers in the first half which propelled her to a point total of seven to go with five rebounds and five assists.
Forward Maddie Carlson made the most of her minutes off the bench, totaling six points on perfect shooting splits for the Mavericks.
As for the Crusaders, their offense struggled to find consistency throughout the matchup.
They were able to swing the ball around the horn well and reverse it back, but they couldn’t penetrate the Mavericks 2-3 zone until late in the game.
Leading the Crusaders was guard Amelia Speckel, who finished with 15 points, three boards and a pair of steals. Speckel nailed 4 of her 8 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
Gabby Bemmels totaled nine points for Loyola, while Maddie Huiras finished with six points to go with her eight rebounds.
Mankato Loyola (8-6) will look to get back in the win column at 7 p.m. Monday against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at home.
Martin County West (11-3) will look to keep the momentum rolling at 7 p.m. Monday against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in Lake Crystal.
