Windom Area boys hockey edges Fairmont Area, 6-2
WINDOM — The Fairmont Area Cardinals struggled to convert power-play chances and lost to Windom Area 6-2 Monday night. Sonny Heil’s hat trick sparked the winning effort for the Eagles.
Heil got the scoring started 7 minutes into the opening period with a goal off an assist from Wriley Haugen. The two combined yet again in identical fashion 2 minutes later to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead.
Weston Murray scored the final goal of the first period for the Eagles off a find from Luke Anderson.
The Cardinals fought back in the second period however. A solo goal from forward Gavin Kester gave Fairmont Area life 6 minutes into the period.
Forward Lucas Sommers cut the Cardinals’ deficit to 3-2 with a goal off a feed from defender Luke Kester.
The momentum wouldn’t stay long though as the Eagles cushioned their lead with a third goal from Heil to finish out the period with the score at 4-2.
The Eagles capped the win with two goals in the final period — one from Landon Pillatzki and the other from Andrei Rivera to put the game out of reach at 6-2.
Fairmont Area (2-15) plays at 7 p.m. Friday on the road against Morris/Benson Area at the Lee Community Center.
Windom Area (4-12) will look to continue its winning ways as the Eagles play next at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at home against Worthington.
