FAIRMONT — Fairmont girls basketball dispatched the Pipestone Area Arrows with ease 75-35 during Big South action Friday night at Cardinal Gym.
The Cardinals leaned on a balanced offensive attack with a focus on ball movement to get out to a comfortable lead.
Fairmont sophomore guard Brylee Miller set the pace for the first half, going 4 for 6 from the floor to go with four boards and four assists. Miller finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Fairmont post player Nevaeh Rahm helped Miller on the interior, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds. Rahm’s presence on the interior helped open the floor for the Cardinals shooting from deep.
Senior guard Ava Terfehr was the main beneficiary. Terfehr scored 13 points, going 3 for 4 from deep, while also dishing six assists and nabbing a pair of steals.
Also contributing to the Cardinals’ cause was junior forward Ellie Ortega. Ortega notched nine points to go with three rebounds and three steals.
Fairmont was able to dissect the Arrows’ 2-3 zone with ease while the Arrows struggled to find good looks against the Cardinals’ man defense.
“We moved the ball really well in the first half, we practiced it,” Cardinals head coach Sara Junkermeier said. “We knew that they had two really good guards that we had to defend and I think our defense actually fueled some of our offense, and we worked a lot on attacking that 2-3 zone (Wednesday) in practice.”
The pressure from the Cardinals led to easy buckets on the other end.
Sophomore guard Jadyn Kor led the Arrows with 12 points.
Another bright spot for the Arrows was eighth-grade guard Amyra Mahik. Mahik started the game a bit slow but ended strong with eight points, three boards and a pair of assists for Pipestone.
Following the blowout win, the Cardinals improve to 6-1 overall.
Fairmont tips off the Windom Holiday Tournament against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27.
The Arrows fall to 1-6 overall and hope to right the ship when they play at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 2 against Marshall in Marshall.
