Red Bulls’ Rohman takes 1st at River Riot

REDWOOD FALLS — Redwood River Riot champion.

Martin County Red Bull freshman grappler Pierce Rohman etched his name into elite company on Saturday by capturing the 121-pound crown at the 36-team, two-day invitational in Redwood Falls.

Torrey Paplow contributed a third-place individual medal at 133 pounds and Maddex Faber earned a spot on the podium with a fifth-place showing at 145 to add scoring punch to Rohman’s first-place performance to steer the Red Bulls to 13th place overall.

Class AA No. 9-ranked Marshall amassed 163.5 points to squeeze by Class AA No. 5-ranked Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle/Montevideo United’s runner-up total of 159.5 to win the Riot’s team championship.

Rohman, who’s ranked No. 9 at 121 pounds in Class AA, opened Friday’s first round with a bye before coasting to a textbook 22-7 technical fall over Faribault’s Chase Vargo in second-round action.

Rohman did not allow a point in collecting a 9-0 major decision over Wabasso’s Zach Skoblik in the quarterfinals before delivering a 9-1 major decision loss to New Ulm Area’s Alex Portner in the semifinals.

The Red Bulls’ freshman 121-pounder then disposed of Class A No. 9-ranked 114-pounder Moe Erdman of Adrian Area via a 7-0 winning decision in the tournament’s championship bout on Saturday.

Paplow avenged his only loss in the two-day Riot’s competition at 133 pounds to exit the Redwood Falls facility with a bronze medal.

Paplow opened with a fall in 3:29 over United’s Grayson Olson before earning a 3-0 second-round win over Mankato West’s Robert Wicks.

Class AA No. 1-ranked 133-pounder Vance Barz of Sauk Rapids-Rice then garnered a 10-7 decision over Paplow during quarterfinal action.

Paplow demonstrated his mettle by battling back through the consolation bracket, sticking Fulda/Murray County Central’s Teague Meyer in only 27 seconds before planting Maple River/United South Central’s Isaiah Gonzalez in 4:28 during a wrestleback quarterfinal.

Paplow continued his medal quest by pinning Faribault’s JT Hausen in the consolation semifinals in 1:50 before edging Barz for third place in overtime by a 10-8 decision.

Faber opened his Riot tournament with a first-round bye at 145 before slipping by Maple Grove’s Alex True in the second round, 7-6.

Faber earned a 6-2 quarterfinal win over Minneota’s Chase Johnson before getting pinned by No. 4-ranked Class AA 139-pounder Daniel Gunlogson in the semifinals in 3:14.

The Red Bulls’ freshman 145-pounder then lost a 9-1 major decision to Marshall’s Tyson Louwagie in the wrestlebacks before earning an 11-2 major decision over Maple River/USC opponent Wyatt Walters in the fifth-place match.

The Red Bulls travel to St. James tonight for a Big South Conference dual meet.
